Can anyone please help resolve the following problem with my ‘WD MY Book Essential (Smartware v.1.6.4)’ system?

The ‘backup’ and ‘retrieve’ tabs are inaccessible since they are grayed out;

The icon for the WD backup drive (My Book) is not visible. Only the computer icon is visible.

As a result, I am unable to retrieve any backed up files. In fact, I cannot verify whether this system is still performing its continous backups.

I don’t know what caused this and when it happened

Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The drive is not recognized by the computer

power cycle the PC and drive

this should get the drive back on the computer unless there are problems with the drive

The WD backup drive was visible to the computer, i.e. one could access the folders on it. Nonetheless, recyling power did the trick. Thank you so much for the solution and for your early reply!
