My Book 1TB only appears when computer turned on

My WD My Book 1TB only shows up as an external drive when I have connected it to my laptop with the USB cable  before  I turn the laptop on.  If I disconnect it to connect it to something else then try and re-connect it to my laptop later it doesn’t show up.  I have not noticed any other problems except the Setup for WD Smartware seems to start every time I connect the My Book also even though I followed the installation process correctly when I first installed the software.

I have looked at the FAQ and followed the instructions for how to correctly connect/disconnect the external drive but it makes no difference.

It is extremely frustrating to have to re-start my laptop every time I disconnect the My Book.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Have you test the drive on a desktop computer?

Try re-installing the USB drivers on your laptop. Also make sure that the drive is connected to the wall power outlet when you connect the unit.
