I have several M200 devices which all worked fine with my Audible.Com account for some time. May be a year ago, Sansa Updater updated itself and then the firmware on some of my devices. (At least that is what I am guessing). Some how complicated with Windows recently updating Win Media Player to latest v11.x, my M200’s stopped working correctly. The old Firmware Updater just reports an endless communications error. The current Sansa Updater sees the M200 device, but never reports back if there is new firmware available.
Audible manager (which is what I care about) works correctly with one of my three M200’s., but not the others.
M230, 512 Mb. f/w -2.2.5A
M240, 1 Gb. f/w -2.2.5A
M240, 1 Gb. f/w -4.1.08A
As far as I know, at least the two M240’s are identical, US versions. The fm radio works fine on all 3 units.
How do I force-load the 4.1.08A firmware (which appears to be the one that works)?
Is this likely to fix the problem on the M230 also, or will that need different firmware?
Hope there is some kind person out there who can help!

They are not identical. The v4 player is basically the same as a Sansa Clip, except in a different package and using a AA battery. The V2 player is a much older design that predates essentially all other Sansa players still mentioned on these boards.

You can only run a v4 firmware on a device with v4 hardware. Putting the wrong firmware version on should be impossible, but if you somehow figured out a way it would destroy your player. If you want some feature on the v4 firmware, you will have to go buy a v4 player.
Thanks for the suggestion - but -These devices are identical- at least the 1Gb obes are. They all used to work correctly, but then for no reason, the Sansa Updater installed new firmware on two of my devices. They still work partially to play MP3 files, but the ones that got incorrectly updated no longer work with Audible. They are not detected correctly by the PC.
My question still stands!
I am almost certain the Sansa Updater installed the wrong firmware on two of my devices. How to I revert to the previous firmware that used to work fine with Audible?

Open them up, you’ll see the insides are completely different (AMS CPU vs. TCC CPU), which makes them a lot less then identical in the only place that matters.

You can update a v4 player by copying the firmware file to the player and ejecting the USB plug. Theres some firmware files here:
I have no idea how the v2 CPU is made to accept firmware updates. Its much older so it may or may not use the same method as newer sandisk players like the v4 or Clip.
Thanks - that sounds like all the info I need to get to the bottom of what’s going on! I can understand the 512 Mb unit having different guts, but the 1Gb units were all purchased at the same time and I think they all had the same firmware at some time.
I will open up the units and see what that reveals.

Actually, the 512MB unit is also a V2, so it has the same guts. It doesn’t matter when you bought them or the memory capacity. You can add more memory chips without changing the CPU, and you can sell two players with different CPUs at the same time (which sandisk does constantly e.g. clipv1, clipv2, e200v1, e200v2, fuzev1, fuzev2, etc).
Also, you’re mistaken about them ever having had the same firmware. You can’t take code written for one CPU and run it on a different CPU, anymore then you can install Windows on your gameboy
I understand that the firmware and hardware must be matched. What I do not understand is why I had 4 M2xx units - all which worked fine with Audible - then, all of a sudden, Audible Manager started reporting that the Firmware was out of date on my devices. At first I could not work out what was going on. I kept following the Audible links to SanDisk and installed a newer Sansa Updater. Eventually, I worked out that the M2xx’s that were v4 seemed to work OK with Audible, but those with the v2 firmware did not. It is certain that all the units worked fine with Audible. Something changed somewhere that stopped the v2’s from working.
I will be interested to get to the bottom of what changed! May be Audible made a change that now required the v4 firmware.
Were you ever able to resolve this? My m240 I purchased new has ver 3.2.8. It worked once. Now everytime i try to use it with audible manager that program reports that the firmware needs to be updated but sansa updater reports that it is up to date. The one book i did load plays fine. Wish it were longer though!
