How to recover the data from Cruzer Micro 4GB - Accidental Erase

Hi, I have a Cruzer Micro 4GB U3 with security enabled, i typed the password wrong once and I accidentally clicked the erase button when it poped up. I immediately unplug by usb from the computer without going through the propoer process (i.e. using eject button)

When I plug in the usb back to the computer again, the U3 program no longer requires me to enter a password. In “My Computer”, I see both the U3 system drive and the Cruzer drive. In Curzer drive, the capcity showed that the space free is only 63MB, i believe my files are still in the USB. (I hope at least) but all files are now shown in alien words (corrupted), is there anyway to recover the file? Please help.

"i typed the password wrong once and I accidentally clicked the erase button "

You did a lot more than that.  If you type the wrong U3 password you are prompted to enter it again, up to 3 times.  Plus you are given the option to Show hint and click on a Forgot Password button.

You can try running CHKDSK on the writable portion of the drive.  See if it reports errors on the drive.

Thanks Ed and Yes I think i was just out of mind by clicking the “erase” button without knowing it. Anyway, I have run the CHKDSK function and there is a file created in the USB named “Found.000” with around 10000 files under the format XXX.chk, is there any way to recover those files?

Thanks.

Wow!!  That’s a lot of pieces.  At this point all you can do is open each of the pieces in notepad and see if they make sense and manually recreate your documents from what you see.  Basically I think you’ve lost everything.  Sorry.

Ed,

Can this happen without the U3 password being entered wrong 3 times? Does the count of allowable tries reset when I enter the right password? Today the drive only asked me once for the password and went to screen showing the erase button. Without paying proper attention I clicked on it thinking that I had entered the password wrong and I would get another attempt to enter it. I am just trying to understand if someone else might have gotten hold of my drive and in my absence tried to access it unsuccessfully.

"Can this happen without the U3 password being entered wrong 3 times?"

To the best of my knowledge, NO.

"Does the count of allowable tries reset when I enter the right password? "

YES.  That one I’m sure of.

That would certainly explain things.  Or maybe they picked up yours by accident and tried to use it, and couldn’t.

if you didn’t copy other new data onto it, then the data can be recovered, just use 3rd party data recovery software online to recover data for you. good luck!

i have excatly the same problem.

how did you solve it? please help me!!!

Hello, shekshek. Did you solve your problem? The Cruzer Micro is a USB flash drive made by SanDisk. It is available in a variety of drive sizes. Its design features a retractable USB connector, which means that you no longer have to worry about losing its cap or the device being damaged, so,  what you need the is data recovery software,no need to take it to data company.

Here is the article about how to recover usb drive data.

But I could be wrong. Your description of the Cruzer was helpful.  Unfortunately I suspect the running of CHKDSK screwed up any chance of file recovery, by any recovery app, and for shekshek’s sake I hope I’m wrong.

FWIW Free file Recovery apps:

Do make sure you click the correct Download button .  Some ads on download pages try to confuse people.

When you delete a file on FAT32 or NTFS file system, its content is not erased from disk but only reference to file data in File Allocation Table or Master File Table is marked as deleted. It means that you might be able to recover deleted files, or make it visible for file system again. here you can try Vibosoft Data Recovery software.

$59.95!!

Seems a little much don’tcha think?  The prior post’s apps are FREE to use and not just to trial.

Looks like SPAM to me.

You can Scan for Problems (Windows)
1.Insert the drive into the USB port on the computer.
2.Open My Computer and right click on the Removable Disk Icon. Choose the Properties option.
3.Click on the Tools tab.
4.Click on the Check Now button.
5.Click on both " Automatically fix file system errors" and " Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" check boxes. Click Start.
6.Wait for the scan to complete. Click Close when finished.

If you still not clear, here a step-by-step tutorial may help you recover data from USB Drive.

Hope this helps, it happened to me as-well.

Interesting link.  Is that $29.95 app one where you download it, it scans the drive and shows all the files it can recover, but doesn’t allow you to actually recover them until you pay for the app?

I would try the FREE recovery apps shown in this posting http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/All-SanDisk-USB-Flash-Drives/How-to-recover-the-data-from-Cruzer-Micro-4GB-Accidental-Erase/m-p/294499#M4996 before trying your app.

The best way to recover data is use some free data recovery software.

You may try free tools. I had success with free tools last time.

you may use data recovery software to recover data from Cruzer Micro 4GB card.

The best way to recover data from curzer micro 4GB memory card is to use sandisk data recovery software, you may refer to this sandisk memory card data reocovery guide that helped me before

http://www.asoftech.com/articles/sandisk-memory-card-data-recovery.html

The guide is easy to follow so you should not have problem follow it to recover data from sandisk memory card.

It too bad the Asoftech Data Recovery Software app that the Asoftech article describes costs so much.

“Asoftech Data Recovery’s usual price is $69.95, now it is selling at a promotion price of $39.95.”

I’d stick with the free apps shown above before spending that kind of money…
