How to Connect USB Cable

I have a 4GB Sansa Clip+.    Normally, when I connect a device to the USB port of my computer, I plug the USB cable into the device first and then I plug the cable into the computer.  The instructions for my Clip+ said to do it the opposite way.  It said to first plug the cable into the computer and then plug the cable into the Clip+.  Does it matter which way I do it?
