Sorry if this doubt is already here but I didn’t find it.
I had a WD elements but now is dead so I need to buy another one. But I need to understand some things. I was thinking to buy an Ultra because it has automatic backup and the possibility to backup to dropbox but I don’t understand that. I want to know the size of the account. I mean, If I have a free account on dropbox I only have the minimum, right? So, I buy 1 TB WD disk but in dropbox I only have 2 GB?
You are correct. The Passport Ultra includes the WD Smartware software. This software has the option to backup to Dropbox but you must have a Dropbox account in order to do this. The limit for your Dropbox backup will be determined by your Dropbox account size.
I’m not impressed with this solution. The software is junk. The forums are awash with people with problems and there is zero help offered. It’s pretty basic, in 2016 there should be simple and reliable solutions. This is not it. Mine failed to respond to its own WD smartware software. It is seen by windows and works fine as an external drive. Everything about WD software for the drive is unresponsive. The problem became apparent after a WD recommended update. I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version. Nada. I reverted to the original version that came on the drive… No bueno. I have work to do and this sort of problem is a time killer. My 2 cents.
WD SmartWare Pro allows you to use WD SmartWare with non-WD SmartWare hard drives such as a WD Elements, as well as using Dropbox as a backup destination.
