FLAC and battery life

On Rockbox forum I read that battery life in original firmware is very short when playing back FLAC files. Is it true? Do I have to install Rockbox on a new player to get 14-15 hours of FLAC playback?

Yes.

How come? And why does the battery suddenly improve when installing Rockbox? Can i go back to the original firmware if i regret installing Rockbox?

It’s all in the firmware.

Yes, you can uninstall Rockbox if you don’t like it.  But note that even with it installed, you still can use the original firmware–see the manual.  Also note, though, that Rockbox may eliminate the player’s ability to play DRM’ed files, even if Rockbox is uninstalled.

So i can’t play DRM files even if Rockbox and bootloader is uninstalled and flashed with the Sandisk original firmware?

You might be able to, or you might not be able to. There have been reports going both ways, I believe.

I think you can but you might have delete and re add any DRM tracks. Search I know its been posted here or elsewhere before.

I don’t believe that’s been discussed here; perhaps at the anythingbutipod.com forums.

If what Saratoga writes is the case, great news!  The last I heard, though, it was unknown if installing Rockbox would eradicate the player’s DRM capability (it was said, originally, that it would; but then things became a bit muddied over time)–wish it weren’t so!   :frowning:

I can’t really remember the details, but IIRC the problem is that if you change the time in rockbox all the DRM tracks in the OF expire, so you have to readd them at the new time (or just don’t change the time).

I checked and the earlier admonition at the Rockbox page about possible DRM eradication is no longer there.  The current warning has been “reduced” to:  “Installation of a bootloader may or may not cause any DRM music in the Sandisk player to suddenly expire. If it does, you may be able to fix it using these instructions.”  [http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Sansa-Fuze/Fuze-Rockbox-Rhapsody-Channels-1-Happy-Camper/m-p/245022/highlight/true#M49089]

Nice news!
