Extreme Portable 500G on M1 MacBook Pro drops and reconnects frequently. Why?

When connected to my MacBook Pro M1 (16-inch, 2021), the Extreme Portable 500Gb drops out and reconnects instantly fairly frequently. One could think it has to do with the heating up of the memory chip as the mac seems to do that to external memory like USB-sticks and the likes, but is it really that? And is there anything I can do about it?
I’ve not experienced any data loss yet and I actually can continue to work in files stored on it. But it feels not good, feels unreliable…

When your portable SSD disconnects from your Mac, do you see a notification such as “Disk Not Ejected Properly” or “Eject *** before disconnecting or turning it off”?
If so, restart your Mac and check whether the portable SSD still disconnects and reconnects randomly. If the issue persists, try the following steps:

  1. Disable the “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” option.

  2. Connect the SSD to your Mac using a powered USB hub.

  3. Set the default disk sleep time to the maximum value.

  4. Disable or uninstall any third-party antivirus programs.

  5. Boot into Safe Mode.

  6. Repair the SSD using Disk Utility > First Aid.

  7. Update macOS, or downgrade to a previous version.

  8. Recover important data and reformat the SSD (as a last resort).
