Cruzer Glide 4G - Not Recognized

I dont get a pop up message, its not located in the device manager. The only thing thats under my disk drivers is ST500DM0 02- 1BD142 SATA Disk Drive. There is pretty much no recognition that my flash drive is even then, on any computer I try it on. It worked fine one day and then the next, nothing at all. I’d really appreciate any help in fixing this, all my work is on the flash drive and not backed up anywhere else.

Even if i can’t save the flash drive and theres a way to get my info off it, i’ll take that help too.

I have this same problem also, with the only difference being that mine is a 16GB Cruzer Glide. I have two identical Cruzer drives. I got them mixed up so I plugged in one and it loaded up just fine. I put the other one in and it started installing some Firebird software which I was assuming was a newer version of the security software that comes preloaded on the Cruzer. However, after it completed, nothing remained. The second disk showed up in my file manager as a removable drive up to the point when the software finished trying to install. Then it disappeared. I tried plugging in the first drive again but nothing shows up anymore - for either drive. I ran my virus/spyware scanners and neither reported anything. This leads me to believe the preinstalled software on the Cruzer isn’t working. Why it doesn’t show up as a removeable drive in my file manager but will show up in my device manager is puzzling. I’d also like to know how I can get my files off these two drives now.

I’m currently running Windows 8.1 and I don’t see anything related to the Cruzer drives outside of the device manager at this point. Please help.

I recommend you find a tech repair shop that can try to recover your work. A local one preferably.  The drive could have gotten hit with a power surge, too much heat, a bent contact, etc.

Sorry.

@DSmith760

It sounds like you got hit with a virus.  And your system’s antivirus didn’t stop it.

Sorry

Thanks for checking in Ed. My first thought was a virus but I’ve scanned multiple times and the system is clean. I’m able to open the first Cruzer drive on another machine with no problem but when I load it on my PC, it will show as a removable drive for about 15 seconds before it disappears from the File Explorer. Again this drive used to work fine until I plugged in the second Cruzer drive. That’s when the Firebird logo appeared and tried to install or update something on that drive. Now neither drive can be viewed on this machine.

I checked my event log during the time I plugged in the drives. I got the following entries from my System log.

A problem has occurred with one or more user-mode drivers and the hosting process has been terminated.  This may temporarily interrupt your ability to access the devices.

From those logs it would appear that when the second Cruzer drive was inserted it attempted to update itself and something didn’t work correctly from then on. Hopefully this helps.

Edit: There are a number of files from here on regarding these two drives. If you’d like I can send a copy of the log file so you can review it. That info above is for the first drive I inserted. After the second drive (which has similar log entries) there are some about a WPD-ClassInstaller referring to autoplay registration and layer bits %2 being requested but layer bits 3% were registered.

When I filtered through the log file some more, this log entry was noted also.

The device E:\ (location (unknown)) is offline due to a user-mode driver crash.  Windows will attempt to restart the device 5 more times.  Please contact the device manufacturer for more information about this problem.

So, let me know. Happy to send a huge log file or a filtered one without all the other junk.

it started installing some Firebird software

In that SanDisk doesn’t have a Firebird app I’ll stick with my malware theory.  Good luck.

I’m telling you, there is no virus/malware. I’ve used Avast, Norton, McAfee, Kapersky’s, Sophos and a few malware programs and none of them came up with anything. I’ve even had a third party scan the drive and they came back with nothing also. There is no virus on my PC or on either of the two Cruzer disks.

For whatever reason, your flash drive no longer works on this machine when it’s inserted. I’ve had these drives for at least 6 months and never had a problem until something tried updating. Perhaps it was the secure access software installed on it, I don’t know and I don’t like guessing that’s why I’m here and I’d like to figure out what got messed up.

All I can do is relay the only information I have and that’s the error logs from my event log files at the time I inserted the disk. I’m trying to do what the error log is asking me to do and contact the device manufacturer. If this isn’t the proper place to do that then where should i go?

I’ll stick with what I posted earlier and that when I inserted the drive it launched an update. The log file says an update to the User Mode driver framework from version 1.26 to 2.0 took place.  Here’s the log entries for that and then some.

  Hello!

Look, what I would do is this:
1 - Go to a CyberCafe and test the pendrive in different PCs with wXP.
2 - For recover important data, just use Recuva  that is Totally Free.
3 - Then delete all the preinstalled software, unless bought the pendrive by this, because is Adware and Bloatware,  and is much annoying in this case.

Regards, Alfred.  (Google translated).

I can open the drives up on other PC’s just not this one. The firmware drivers it installed through the Firebird driver package (roughly a collection of 35 or so drivers if you believe 3rd party searches on the web) were corrupt. How it installed those is the big question. When I inserted my cruzer disk it into the USB port it ran an update. Now, did the firmware get the update from SanDisk servers or does it get from Microsoft’s servers? Where ever it was designed to get the firmware update from, that server has the SanDisk Firebird driver package installed on it and that’s where the corrupted driver came from.

When I plug in the disk now (and yes it is completely clean except for one text file with one word on it), it will recognize it as a removable drive (E:) for about 30s during which time File Explorer will have a green progress bar slowly fill up as it attempts to read the drive. During those 30s I can not select the cruzer drive at all. When the progress bar nears the end around 30s, the disk disappears from file explorer (*poof* no more E: drive). Only way to start the process over is to restart my PC (thus reloading the drivers from scratch). Rinse and repeat.
