Hey everyone, just a quick question. I was wondering if it supposed to take 4 to 5 hours to fully charge the clip the first time? I’ve had other mp3 players that did not take this long, but I dont want to shoot it yet thanks!
It’ll take about 4 - 5 hours, and the icon will stop blinking when it’s fully charged. If you search through here, there’s a few other postings on the same subject :smileyvery-happy:.
So far I’ve not been able to get my clip (4g) to charge beyond 50%.
Last night I let it sit connected to a wall charger and it only charged to 50% after about 12 hrs.
I have it connected to a computer now to see if it’ll charge any better.
Its curious though that the display is constantly flashing on and off going from a screen which says “connected” to the Sandisk logo to a blank screen and then back to “connected” with animated charging battery. I don’t know if this is normal or if something is wrong with the unit. Given that the OLED has a limited life it seems a bit strange that they would have it constantly flashing through screens like that.
Is this normal behavior when connected to a computer?
thanks, jon.
Yes, the rolling display is normal on the Clip, as long as it is connected to a live USB port. As for the charging issue, the Clip needs at least 200mA capacity for effective charging, preferably USB 2.0, which supports the power management protocol. A USB 1.0 port (earlier computer, 98se/Win2000 for example) does work fine, but some have experienced charging issues. If you’re using a laptop, run with the charger connected.
Win XP (SP2) is recommended as a base OS for the Clip, as is Windows Media Player 10/11. If you are having an extended charge cycle, it’s possible you have a weak port. First, unplug the Clip and let it refresh. Tha battery monitor display sometimes needs this initial refresh.
With the Clip running on its own, select Settings > Info on the device. The Firmware version currrently available is 1.01.20. The latest versions of the firmware have improved the battery meter, and have selectable USB Modes.
I have seen communications problems keep the Clip from charging properly, as the same processor that manages charging is also handling everything else. If the device is busy establishing communications, it won’t display “connected” in most cases, and the battery logo will stop waving.
In Win XP/Vista, navigate to My Computer, and under Other Devices, you should see the Clip logo. Right-Click on the device, and select Properties. If the device is connected in MTP mode, you will get a battery status indicator. If you are connected in MSC mode, this function will not be available, and the Sansa will be shown under “Devices With Removable Storage” with an assigned drive letter.
If you are using a USB hub device, often these beasties don’t pass on enough charge current for DAPs like the Clip. You can try another USB port.

Yeah, I’d try another port or computer and see if you have better luck.

A lot of people have complained about the OLED screen not shutting down while charging. I think the Sansa people mentioned on here that they were going to correct that problem when the next firmware is released in a couple of weeks, but I can’t remember for sure. Does anyone know if the next fw is supposed to shut off the screen while charging on a computer? I wonder if we’d be able to use the Clip while charging on a computer if that was changed.

Yes, with the new firmware the screen shuts off after some time when its connected to USB. So you can charge overnight, connected to the computer.
That’s awesome! Thanks, Sansafix!
