Can't format Sandisk Cruzer 16gb under x64 but x86 is fine

I’ve got a really odd issue where Windows 7 won’t let me format, partition or do anything at all to my Cruzer card, if I plug it into my laptop running x86 it works totally fine.

My usb ports are all working fine, I’ve tried USB hard drives and other memory cards and they all work, plug in the Cruzer and nothing, it’s present under the Device Manager and Disk Management but trying to format results in an “unexpected error” message.

Any ideas?

I should add that I used the card as a memtest boot disk a few weeks ago, I don’t know if it’s related but I thought I’d mention it.

Looks like I’m not alone…

Since you can format on your XP system do it there and be done with it.  It’s not exactly something one does more than once or twice.

Thanks for the reply.

Like I said, Windows 7 refuses to do anything with the card, I can’t read it, write it, format it or even give it a cheeky tickle.

It’s 100% functional in my XP netbook and W7 x86 laptop, I’ve tried formatting from Linux and even Windows 98, it’s only Windows 7 64bit edition that doesn’t seem to like it.

Chris.

Hello?

I think a Windows 7 forum would have better answers for you.  And when you find the answer please report back.

As it happens, I reinstalled Windows 7 after buying a new graphics card and the Cruzer works properly now, so it’s definitely some kind of Windows issue.

Weird.

What kind of graphics card did you get?  I’m in need of one and could use the advice.
