Brand new Extreme USB 3.0 64 GB, unusable

Thanks for the heads-up!  I just got off the phone with Sandisk and we tried reformatting it several times to no avail.  They said to take it back to the store.   Must be one heck of a big bad batch as I ordered my from TigerDirect on-line the 27th of Dec. 2012!   Nice to hear you got one that is working!

More info - Called Sandisk and they said to reformat it to exFAT.   They walked me through it on my computer.   But after several tries it still does not work so they said to return it to the store.   I asked her to report to the production department that FAT32 should not be on a 64GB flash drive!!!

Mine has:

SN120 5 23463B

SDCZ80-064G-A75

I just posted the numbers seconds before I saw your post…you are right.   My numbers are almost the exact same as yours!  Thanks!

oops!   Make that:

BN120 5 23463B

Only the “5” is different from the others.

The replacement I got (the one working OK) has this number:

BN121023463B

SDCZ80-064G

Thanks for all the above information. I’d been getting nowhere trying to find out why my flash drive was not recognised in any USB 3.0 port but was functioning perfectly in USB 2.0.

I read the above, checked the serial on the back of my device … BN121023463B, (which seems to be the one that is working OK for xerces8) … and have contacted SanDisk.

Thanks again for your posts, very helpful.

I have the same issue. Caused in the same way as @ben-edwards.

I get the same problem. I think we might be talking about a large scale problem here with using this drive on a Macbook Pro.

I have tried a dozen ways to format this thing with no luck. The last block cannot be accessed!

I want my money back or a working flash drive, please Sandisk. That’s only fair as you have my money.

I am using a Sandisk Extreme 3.0 64GB flash drive, bought new in authentic packaging from a reputable store, paid $64 odd and am using a 15" MBP w/ Retina; in case you wanted to know what my environment was. Flash drive cannot be formatted in Disk Utility -> last block cannot be accessed.

If drive is brand new it doesn’t need to be formatted.

If drive not working return it to the store where you bought it.

If store won’t replace it write to SanDisk for an RMA.

Wow, I can’t believe this still hasn’t been fixed. I got two replacements awhile back and decided to just use them for storage. No boot disk, or full OS. I learned my lesson. However Sandisk makes awesome 64Gb micro sd cards. Go figure.

Just a couple of points. Mac Os for boot journals, so does Ntfs. If you want to use for storage go with a format that doesn’t journal. As everyone knows, the latest USB 3.0 drives have 8 lanes and SCSI internals. Totally different animal. If you want the speed, look for one of those thumb drives if you want to run a full OS on the thumb drive. My favorite is still Adata N005 Pro. Every format just works with good speed.

This drive is awfully picky. Just bought mine yesterday, and it simply won’t work in USB 3.0 mode. I can plug it into the USB 2.0 port just fine, and deleting or transferring files normally (NTFS btw). My USB 3.0 controller is Fresco FL1000 with the latest firmware update, and it can’t even detect this drive, even though I’ve been using it for a while with other USB 3.0 devices.

BUT, just found out this morning, it worked FLAWLESSLY in certain USB 3.0 controller. I tried it in AMD 3.0 controller, and it worked! This drive is really peculiar and it’s really non-standard. I do not know what SandDisk can help us with this product. Maybe release a patch or something?

Got a reply from SanDisk when I sent this ticket:

"Dear SanDisk,

I just recently purchased USB mentioned above. My laptop is an ASUS U46SV with a Fresco Logic xHCI FL1000 USB 3.0 driver. I already tried plugging this USB numerous times to no avail. It just won’t get detected. When I plugged it to the other USB 2.0 port, it worked just fine. When I tried to use the USB 3.0 port with other USB 3.0 devices (K*ngston DT USB3.0, Th*rmaltake HDD Dock USB 3.0), it worked flawlessly. It just won’t detect this particular USB in 3.0 mode. Can you please help me with a workaorund for this particular problem?

Thank you."

"Thank you for emailing SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make sure you have all the resources you need to get the most from your product.

We understand that your Cruzer Extreme 3.0 32GB USB flash drive can’t be detected on USB 3.0 port and can be detected on USB 2.0 port. Please be advised that because there is no standardization for USB 3.0 port currently. We suspect this is the reason that caused this issue.

Please try it on other computers for the USB 3.0 ports to see if it works, if not we will provide replacement for your drive."

Which I did, and it worked with AMD USB 3.0 controller. Today I tried it on another controller (Intel), it didn’t even detect it. So basically, this USB is extremely “delicate”.

“there is no standardization for USB 3.0 port currently”

Huh?

Is this a joke?

What are then all those blue USB ports with the SuperSpeed logo?

What are then all those blue USB ports with the SuperSpeed logo?”

Unique.

Lol. I don’t wanna know anymore.  If they’re saying that, it means THEIR USB is not “standard”. Not the USB 3.0 itself. Good job on that one Sandisk. Good job on telling those various USB 3.0 controllers that can detect every other devices in this world except yours as the faulty ones…

After reading many positive reviews on the internet, I just got a new Extreme USB 3.0 32 GB today. Unfortunately, in none of the reviews they mentioned about this problem, otherwise I would have been skeptical in the first place.

Anyway, I took it home and plugged it in. On the USB 3.0 ports it keeps popping in and out every few seconds. On the USB 2.0 ports is seems to be working stable so far.

I can’t believe Sandisk is still selling a product that has such a major compatibility problem, even after they have been knowing about the problem for one full year already! There also is no warning on the package like “works only with certain USB 3.0 controllers” or so. Btw, my PC has a “AMD USB 3.0 Host controller”, according to the info in the device manager.

I recently purchased a 32GB version from NewEgg with the intent to use it as a Windows 7 DVD image.  I do laptop repair and find it handy to load Windows from a USB instead of a DVD for speed reasons.  I have around 5-10 different USB drives I’ve used in the past with no issues, however this one does not work correctly.  I e-mailed support and got a very lame excuse.

What I sent to them:

I purchased this drive with the intent of using it to load Windows 7 onto computers by copying a dvd iso image to it. I do this with around 4 other brands of USB flash drives and have not had any issues. Once I create the image on the flash drive yours will not allow me past the screen in setup where you can partition the hard drive before loading Windows, it gives an error. Says unable to create partition (on the PCs hard drive i’m trying to load windows onto). If needed, I can provide a screenshot of this error.

What they sent:

Dear Jason,

Thanks for emailing SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make sure you have all the resources you need to get the most from your product.

I would like to inform you that we at SanDisk have not tested our flash drive as a bootable device.  SanDisk does not provide any utility or instructions to make the flash drives bootable. You can do an online search for " how to make flash drive bootable " for instructions.

Did they even read what I wrote?  The issue isn’t a bootable device problem.  I get to the point in the Windows install where you have the option to create a partition on the internal HDD of the computer and load Windows to it.  I have tested this on multiple computers with the same DVD image on another USB Flash Drive with no issue.  It is only the Sandisk Extreme 32GB that i have this happening.  Does anyone else have this issue?
