Brand new Extreme USB 3.0 64 GB, unusable

Hello all,

I bought the 64 gig Extreme USB 3.0 and have had nothing but grief.

After I put my personal data on it (read this as I WILL NOT be sending back for them to recover) it locked up.

I cannot retrive my data, I get a dmbackup.dll error when I try to start the interface, and I cannot wipe the drive in any OS since the drive is showing as write protected in Debian and Win 7.  btw the OS is extFAT.

Any ideas? I am ready for the sledge hammer solution and NEVER buyiing anything from SANDISK again.

hey i have the same issue.

it doesn’t work on my mac Lion 10.7.1

Sandisk please fix this!!

can someone report a ticket to Sandisk?

they won’t just come here and solve themself.

I get a dmbackup.dll error when I try to start the interface,”

" btw the OS is extFAT."

Dmbackup.dll is created by SecureAccess and apparently SecureAccess doesn’t support exFAT.

BTW I believe you will find the USB device is manufactured as FAT32 not exFAT.

The only solution to the write protection problem is to return the device to where you bought it or to SanDisk.  For devices containing sensitive information SanDisk has been known to allow the device to be smashed before being returned.

Help yourself:

I tried downloading the Sandisk RecuePro Deluxe demo, run it, it saw my USB drive!!  Halleluah!  I scanned the drive… it took forever only to hang!

Do you have 64GB of free space on your harddrive?

Hi All,

I just spoke to SanDisk technical support and they’ve agreed to replace these usb sticks. It’s possible they have notes in their internal database that shows that this batch is faulty.

Product codes (on usb stick and on packaging):

BN120623463B

SDCZ80-064G

I suggest if you’re one of the many that experience these problems with the usb sticks, you return them to where you got them - or call SanDisk for a return.

I have:

BN120823463B

SDCZ80-064G

And also problems. I just got it today, and have the same problems on 3 PCs (USB3 and USB2 ports):

Can read the prerecorded files and write a few files. But if I try to write a larger file (more than about 15 MB), it locks up.

It also locks up if I try a CHKDSK /F on it.

I’ll open a ticket with SanDisk in any case.

Regards,

David

Same Issue! Really frustrating! It locks up till forever!

Format to NTFS; still lock up when writing files

Format to FAT32; could not succeed to format at the very end part

Format to NTFS again; unable, the drive is totally dead.

Disappointed.:robotfrustrated:

OK. I sent it back to where I bought it. And now, I got a new working one! Thanks.

Thanks for the update wongzaputt.  Glad you have got a working device

I had to return my first one of these back as it wouldn’t work in my mac either.

The replacement works perfectly and it is crazy fast. Just send it back if you have a dud

Got the extreme USB 3.0 64GB flash drive. Managed to copy two files to the drive. Moved it from a WIN XP SP3 machine to an Android device, Asus TF700T 64GB transformer with USB 2.0 port in the keyboard dock, Copied the two files to the Asus. Next time I attempted to copy from the WIN XP box to the 64GB flash drive, I got this error message “The request cannot be performed because of an I/O device error.”

In the Android tab the error message is “paste failed”

The 64GB drive is recognized by WIN and Android 4.1.1 but cannot be used.

I sent it back to the seller and got a replacement that works OK.

Sandisk should put some effort into handling this what appears to be a “serial defect” (don’t know the english expression, it is a case when a whole series/batch of a product has (the same) defect).

The new stick works, as mentioned, but has problems when connected to a uPD720200 USB 3.0 controller.

Interestingly, under Linux it works fine.

Only in Windows 7 it locks up after some data is transferred.

As it seems like the problem could be handled in software/driver, could SanDisk put some pressure (I mean “ask politely”, as a big company that would make more impact if a lone end user would ask) to Renesas to try to address the issue in their drivers?

Thanks!

PS: More information: The Windows 8 builtin USB 3.0 driver from Microsoft also seems to work without error. So it is really something in the NEC/Renesas drivers that causes the problem.

In installed the latest Renesas driver version 2.1.39.0 and now it is much better. Everything appears to work nicely, although I got a corruption in one big (1,5GB) file I copied to the USB stick.

ANybody who has samsung kies program in computer and sandisk flashdisk… they donot work togather. in start menu of your windows (mine is w7 home) write “msconfig” and enter.

then a window will appear. there, you go to statup and uncheck everything about KIes. this is the startup programs to start automatically when win starts. it will as to resatr. do it.

then next time your sandisk will not be recognised. dont care. without touching sandisk, shut down computer and turn on again. every thing will be fine.

I read it smwhere and applied 4 myslef now everything works.

Kies? you have to start manually when you need.

Just received my nice new Extreme 64GB flash drive in the Mail from TigerDirect.com…  Plugged it into my Windows 7 Pro PC (USB 2.0) and I can’t do anything with it.   I can see the files that were already loaded on from the Factory but I can’t even create a new folder.   I’ve tried several things including restarting the computer but Not formating.    Why do they sell a product that doesn’t work???  I guess the “EXTREME” stands for EXTREME measures need to be taken to get it to work…    I guess I’ll have to send it back to TigerDirect - After I give it a BAD Review…

My PC is:

Toshiba Satellite L755D-S5104

Windows 7 upgraded to Professional SP1 - 64bit of course

AMD A6 Quad core processor

4GB Ram

If anyone who is more computer savy then me can figure out how to get this to work - I really would appreciate a heads-up!

What serial number does it have?

(it begins with “BN…” and is printed above the “SDCZ80…” on the back of the USB key)

As I already said in my previous messages, it seems certain batches of this product are broken.

I returned mine (had similar symptoms as you) and got a new one that works fine.
