Accidentally formatted my SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD any safe recovery options?

Hi everyone,

I’m using a SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD as an external drive for storing photos, videos, and some work files. Yesterday I accidentally formatted the drive while trying to prepare another external disk. I realized the mistake immediately and stopped using the SSD right away.

The drive still shows up on my Windows PC, but of course all the files are gone. I haven’t copied anything new to it since the format.

Has anyone here successfully recovered data from a formatted SanDisk external SSD? I’m wondering what the safest next step is. Should I try recovery software myself, or is it better to contact a professional data recovery service to avoid making things worse?

Any advice from people who have been through this would be really appreciated.

One thing to be aware of is that SSDs are a bit different from traditional hard drives because of a feature called TRIM. If TRIM has already cleared the deleted data after the format, recovery can be difficult or, in some cases, impossible. But it’s still worth checking before assuming the worst.

If the files are important, start by connecting the SSD to your PC and scan it with a photo recovery tool, like Stellar Photo Recovery to recover your lost photos and videos. If the software can preview your photos and videos, that’s usually a good sign. Just make sure you recover the files to another drive, not back to the SSD.
