8gb Fuze and car USB

Hello guys…

First time poster here. I just bought my wife a fuze to use in her 2011 Toyota Sienna. It has a USB and Aux port. I have a few questions about the fuze. When I have the fuze plugged into my PC or the car USB port I can not use the device. All it says on the screen is connected. I can access the device from my PC no problem and have successfully uploaded a bunch of songs. Am I missing something here. I would assume you should be able to use the fuze when it is plugged in via the USB cable. I would think you should be able to scroll through all the features and play songs from the media center. That being said it does not function with the car’s USB interface. Once plugged in it says on the display “no support”. I have tried setting the USB interface to all three different settings and no change. When I uploaded the songs the player was set to auto mode. Everything works from the Aux jack and I can get the player to play through the car radio. My wife would really like to see the track info on the car stereo and to be able to skip, FF, pause and what not from the controls on the steering wheel. Is it possible to do this with the fuze? I sure hope so I really like the player, but so far it will not do one of the main things we wanted it to do. Can anyone please help us out?

Thanks,

Aaron

PS I should also mention I am using Windows 7, Rhapsody, Audible, and regular MP3 files.

The stereo unit in your wife’s new car is looking for a ‘dumb’ USB device. This means MSC mode. If you transferred all the songs in the infamous Auto Defect, it probably loaded them iin MTP.

I’d format the player which will erase all content, set the player to MSC mode and re-load. Now the car unit should see it and she should be able to control what player through the unit’s controls. The Fuze’s controls will be disabled.

One thing I noticed recently on vacation when I rented a car with a USB port to the car stereo was, you can do the same thing simply with a memroy card in a reader plugged into the port; it doesn’t have to be a player since all functions of the player are disabled and/or ignored by the stereo system in the car.

When using the AUX port however, you’re powering & controlling everything through the player. It’s the same as plugging headphones into the jack.

One other thing, if you have a memory card inserted in the Fuze, the car’s unit probably will not ‘see’ it. It will read only from the iinternal memory. That’s when your handy-dandy card reader comes in. Plug it in separately to listen to the songs on the card.

OK that’s waht I was assuming the problem was going to be from reading others posts on this forum. So can I simply copy all the data from the fuze to my desktop, format the device and then copy the data back? Like I said there is Rhapsody and Audible content on the device. I am not sure if that will mess up any of the encryption on those files. And will the Rhapsody and Audible stuff work in MSC mode? Also is it normal to just see the connected screen on the fuze when it is plugged into the USB port? I can’t browse any of the menus with it plugged into a USB port computer or car. It just sits at a screen that says connected.

Thanks

Yes.

I must have missed that. No, Rhapsody, Audible & any other DRM-crippled files must be loaded in MTP mode and likely won’t be able to be played through the car’s stereo then. This is going to make things confusing for you if you have content loaded in both modes as you can only see files while you are connected to your computer while in the same mode as they were transferred in.

As I said, when connected to the stereo unit, the unit becomes a ‘dumb’ device, nothing more than a memory source, so all controls on the unit are disabled. Same as when it’s connected to your computer. So yes, that’s normal.

Thanks Tapeworm…

That answers all my questions for now… I’ll do some playing around with the device per your suggestions.

Take care,

Aaron
