16Gb Fuze+ (+32Gb uSDHC) collapses when loaded up

PTJim, as far as I have heard, the database limitation of the J3 is 8000 internal, 8000 external…so good luck!

Yes, I got the same info from reading spec sheets.  That 16,000 should be plenty, as I’m around 10,000 total song titles now and my collection grows pretty slowly these days.

I just hope I don’t run into the same kind of performance issues!

Followup for anybody interested…

I’m on my way to the UPS Store to return my Fuze+.  SanDisk was very prompt to issue an RMA and refund my purchase price when received - so I’m only out several hours of my time and the return-shipping cost.

I will post here again if I ever hear back from their support department about a fix for my problem, but I’m moving on - the Cowon J3 arrives tomorrow.  Even if the Fuze+ firmware can be fixed to manage a very large library, it’s just impractical without a search interface function.

However, I’m keeping my old 8+2Gb e280 and my 8+16Gb Fuze v1 and 8Gb v2 models; SanDisk products are quite nice compared to alternatives in the low-price PMP market and these three units continue to perform just fine and have provided a lot of value.  I’ll continue to use them, with a subset of my music collection, in rough-service environments.

Thanks again to all who’ve followed my little saga and offered advice.

I was reading the fuze+ manual on line at http://www.sandisk.com/microsites/sansafuzeplus/SansaFuze+UG_0915.pdf, and came across this line. “microSD/microSDHC card slot supports additional higher capacities, up to 40GB* of total device content including internal memory (e.g., 8GB player with a 32 GB card).” on page 8. So, I searched the forum to see if they were serious of the limitation, and found this thread. Hopefully, later version of the firmware will solve this issue. If not looks like a 8GB player will give you more storage ultimately than a 16GB player.

Yes, I read this too; it’s pretty confusing.  In any case, I hadn’t hit 40Gb total with the ~9,700 tracks I was trying to load.

It’s all moot for me now, though.  I returned the Fuze+ with an RMA (still haven’t been credited for it, but being patient) and got the Cowon J3 about 3 weeks ago.  All problems solved!  I’m now closing in on 10,800 tracks loaded, plus 7 full-length films and it hasn’t missed a beat - hasn’t slowed down at all with about 52Gb of 64Gb total already used for testing.

And I will proclaim right here and now that I was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG about the value of a good touchscreen interface!  At least for a large collection like mine, it’s obviously essential for quickly accessing desired songs.  The scrolling is much, much faster than a wheel (you can drag a scrollbar in addition to swiping on the screen) and it has virtual-keyboard alphanumeric input for searching.

Of course, I consider hard buttons for player control essential, and the J3 has those unlike the Zune HD.

I left Sandisk products reluctantly (after 3 player purchases), but definitely chose the right replacement product for my needs.
