Hi there,
I just bought 3 114GB usb sticks and while attempting to transfer a 32GB video file onto it I am being told that the file is too big for the device. I am by no means Stephen Hawkins but even I know that 32 is less than 114
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Where did you buy them Freaky? They could be counterfeits, in which case return them to the seller.
If from a reliable source they should be formatted as exFAT and should hold a 32GB file no problem.
The FAT32 file system have a limitation that it doesn’t allow a single file larger than 4GB. To fix this, you can reformat the USB stick to a file system that supports larger files, such as exFAT or NTFS.
Have you checked what file system format your USB flash drive is using? I think it’s highly likely that your USB drive is formatted as FAT32. Regardless of your storage card’s capacity, if it uses the FAT32 format, the size of a single file cannot exceed 4GB (for example, a 32GB video file).
You need to reformat your USB flash drive to exFAT or NTFS, as neither of these file systems has file size limitations.
If you want to confirm this first, you can do the following:
Right-click on the USB flash drive in File Explorer > Click “Properties”.
(Important: Formatting will cause data loss, so be sure to back up all files you want to keep. If you don’t care about the old data, you can ignore this.)
Right-click on your USB drive in File Explorer > “Format” > select exFAT or NTFS > click “Start”.
After formatting is complete, you should be able to store files of any size. [A related blog: File Is Too Large for the Volume’s Format]
