Hi @Eileen1,

Please refer to the article formatting a memory card using a system:

Bad sectors that are caused by physical damage such as broken circuits or water damage can’t be repaired. Usually, the bad sectors caused by software faults can be corrected. However, if the SD card has many bad sectors, it may become unusable, and in that case, replacing the card is the only option.

To solve the issue of bad sectors, you may run chkdsk on Windows:

Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

Type chkdsk X: /f (replace X with your SD card drive letter).

This command checks and fixes file system errors and bad sectors on the SD card.

Alternatively, reformat the SD card. Reformatting can sometimes clear bad sectors; but it depends on the extent of the damage.

If you want to avoid bad sectors, these tips are worth following:

  1. Safely Eject the SD Card: Always eject the card safely from your computer or camera. Abruptly removing it can lead to file system corruption and bad sectors.

  2. Avoid Physical Damage: Prevent the SD card from exposure to moisture, high temperatures, or physical impacts, as these can cause physical damage leading to bad sectors.

  3. Use Proper File System: Format the SD card using the appropriate file system (FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS) based on the card’s size and usage to minimize the risk of bad sectors.

To format an SD card with bad sectors on a Windows PC:

  • Insert the SD card into your computer.
  • Open File Explorer > Right-click the SD card > Choose Format.
  • Choose the file system (FAT32, NTFS or exFAT) and uncheck Quick Format to perform a full format, which might help map out bad sectors.
  • Click Start to begin the process.

(If needed, you can use chkdsk as mentioned earlier to fix errors first.)
