Yahoo! Music Subscription service discontinued

good riddance to bad product.  Your engineers are inept.  Buy a Palm TX, and try to copy it.Here are some hints: If it is plugged in, it

should charge even if it is playing.   I can put the Palm TX next to the sansa, and the sansa will not pick up

the same signal.  Almost impossible to charge in the car, as it turns on and discharges by itself.  Turn it off to charge

slowly, of course, it only runs down the battery fast. It will turn itself back on and start discharging.  If you had

to partner up with wifi, why not live365, the largest internet radio web site. A scroll and punch interface would work.

this was a good concept, but you need better engineers.  this product stank throughout its short life cycle.  It only took a year

for the micro sd to to accept music. Fast battery discharge, slow recharge, who cares if it can take 8 gb card if the battery is dead.

Worst mp3 player I ever bought, even though it worked as mp3 player perfectly. napster here I come.

So what exactly are we supposed to do with all the Yahoo ■■■■ thats already on the connect? Are we going to be able to use it with something else in the near future? My boyfriend spent good money on the connect and now half of the stuff on it doesnt work? That’s kind of lame dont you think?

What do you mean by Yahoo ■■■■?  The songs you/your boyfriend downloaded from Yahoo Music To Go?  That was always subscription music, so as soon as you stop paying for it, you can’t listen to it anymore.  You were renting it.

The only thing that’s going to stop working on the Connect is Yahoo Music To Go.  I guess you could call that “half the stuff”, that depends on how you use the Connect.  And it may get replaced by Rhapsody.

One other question, I know you cant make a playlist on the connect itself, but is there a way to make them through yahoo jukebox or windows media player? I have tried a few times and it just seems to download the songs by album and artist but does not put them in the playlist that I had made. Thanks

I’ve done it with WMP … when you connect your device, you right-click on it and select “Set Up Sync”.  You’re then shown a “Device Setup” dialog box where you can select which playlists will be synced to the device.  You may also need to select “sync this device automatically” in Device Setup to get the playlists themselves to sync, I’m not sure.  Anyway, once you sync the device, the playlists should be synced along with it.

In order to use playlists you’ll need to save them as m3u playlists then they’ll work.  In WMP 11 create the playlist then instead of clicking Save at the bottom there’s a drop down menu at the top of the playlist; select “Save Playlist as…” and then choose the m3u file format, name it, and save.

I use the Windows Explore to generate playlist on the Connect, after the songs have been ripped on.

Aside the fact you plug Palm TX in most of your posts (even though you’ve only done 3), who knows what’s going to happen with the wi-fi service (for music not the ability of the player… that’s staying). If your player was having problems, you should have called SanDisk and if the issue couldn’t be resolved, they probably would have replaced it. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t get the MicroSD expansion to work, nor the battery life expected.

And for everyone that’s complaining at SanDisk about the Yahoo service…the fact of the matter is, Sandisk (and here’s the key) IS NOT IN CHARGE OF WHAT YAHOO DOES WITH THEIR SERVICE.

Like many avid connect users, i’m just tired of seeing people complaining about stuff that has nothing to do with SanDisk, but still blaming them. Stick to actual prolems that we can help with on the forums, or just don’t bother posting about how pissed you are at Yahoo here. Do it to yahoo.

“Professor” just for your information, the sansa expansion card could not initially take music

on the SD card. (read early hype from sansa), it avoids mentioning adding music on the sd card. Only with a later

update could  you place more music on it, right before the wifi got jerked. So it worked as advertised for

a matter of months.  The

sansa worked as designed, it was just poor design on the battery life, does not charge whle playing?

Wifi kills battery life, and their engineers did not have simultaneous charge and play?  sansa CHOSE  Yahoo,

bad decision, but you have to live with your decisions, and Sansa should step up, but they won’t. And it hardly qualified as wifi, since it could ony access Yahoo stations.

ZERO is going to happen with wifi.  Nothing has happened yet, and it won’t.  But when you go to sansa’s site,

it is not even mentioned. Don’t be such a bootlicker.

True, they made a bad business decision by bundling the wi-fi service with Yahoo. However to sweeten the pill they could issue a firmware which will allow us to listen to internet radio. But they won’t. They couldn’t care less. Anyone experienced in class actions here?

I think it’s safe to say Sandisk is not going to be updating the firmware for opening wireless capabilities. But there is a chance for refunds for some… Read up- I’ll keep you all posted:

http://hackingym.blogspot.com/2008/05/sandisk-has-no-plans-to-fix-connect.html

I am on the phone right now with Sandisk support and they are telling me that Yahoo will disconntinue all portable wifi enabled device support and sandisk is not planning to send a new firmware to the player. It’s pass-the-buck tactics like this that are making it impossible to know what to do or what will happen in a month.

I AM asking about refund policy now, and will update when I get off hold.

Ok, I was offered a refund for my player, or a credit for a Fuze 4gb player. There was talk about getting credit for the 8gb view, which seems to me to be the same as the Fuze but with a long screen. Both players have FM radio instead of Wifi, but the Fuse has 40 presets. Both have microSD, neither have a speaker. The Fuze does recording with a built in microphone though.

The process for the refund is: I fax in the reciept, then send a shipping lable. I ship the player back with that lable and they give me a store credit from their website for the Fuze (or view if that’s what I can get). Then they ship the new player according to the shipping I pay for. In the end, it’s a week or two without any player and I will end up with one that doesn’t stream audio over WiFi, the original reason for choosing the connect.

Sandisk was still unable to clarify if ALL 6 of the wireless functions would be disabled, simply repeating the script "wifi will not work. This implies that there will be a manditory firmware update that will DISABLE the Wifi radio in the connect. I would like to prevent this if possible.

The 6 WiFi functions are:

  1. Firmware updating (from Zing? can someone list the URL’s that the connect communicates with to accomplish this, so we can block the update?)
  1. Launchcast streaming audio (yahoo is NOT discontinuing this)
  1. Music2go (might not be the right name) wireless song purchasing direct from the connect
  1. Yahoo Music Unlimited (all you can eat subscriptions music file downloads, being discontinued 7/08, PC users will be transfered to Rhapsody service)
  1. Flickr photos (Yahoo is NOT discontinueing this either).
  1. an ad-hoc wifi signal finder (not an advertised service, but I’ve been found use for this)

If anyone has any clearer information, please share it.

Therre is a Rhapsody music player out there that is able to download and connect to the Rhapsody-To-Go service via WiFi.  It’s made by Haier and can be found here:  http://tinyurl.com/5h9vdp

My question: Why can’t Sandisk utilize or contract this same service for the Sansa Connect?

This is interesting: http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/007093.html

I doubt it will do anything to save our beloved Connect, but who knows?

VERY interesting.  Good find.  (I was just today looking for updated articles… and also how to get Ogg on the Connect.)  Anyways, I wonder if Sandisk acquiring MusicGremlin will keep us, the customers, in vendor lockin.  I would like to be able to connect to shoutcast servers… they are older than dirt (Internet technologically speaking).

Message from Yahoo! Music on July 23, 2008:

"Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Music about your connect.

On August 31, 2008, a firmware update will change the functionality of
Yahoo! Music Unlimited on your Sansa Connect device. After the update,
you will no longer be able to:

-Wirelessly download tracks, albums, and playlists directly onto your
device
-Wirelessly download subscription tracks while listening to
LAUNCHcast radio
-Wirelessly browse, search, and download Yahoo! Music’s top tracks
and personal recommendations
-Send, receive, and download music recommendations with Yahoo!
Messenger

You will still be able to listen to Yahoo! Music’s 100+ free LAUNCHcast
radio stations (150+ stations if you are a LAUNCHcast Plus subscriber).
You will also still be able to play tracks purchased from the Yahoo!
Music store, transferred via connection to PC, and view Flickr photos,
including the most interesting of the day and your personal photo sets."

So if Yahoo continues with WiFi Internet Radio, what’s with the Rhapsody deal?

Why is Sandisk Sansa offering refunds for the connect, if the WiFi will still work?

Where is Sandisk’s statement regarding their Connect’s WiFi (that was the selling point if anyone remembers) product?

Yahoo, Rhapsody, Sandisk- someone has to come up with a comprehensive plan on what is going to happen.  Should tech magazine tag this saga as “bad business practice” and poor communications?

I just got off the phone with SanDisk technical support and was told that the Connect was going to be updated to support the Music Gremlin service!  That was a bit of a surprise to me, as I expected to be given the familiar spiel about continued Launchcast support.  He could not provide me with an expected date for this functionality, but said that it was undergoing testing now.   I was originally going to ask for refund for the Connect, but might wait a bit to see if this really pans out.  Has anyone else been told this, or for that matter, successfully received a refund for their device?

I had never heard of Music Gremlin so I went to check out their website.  The following was posted.

MusicGremlin has been acquired by SanDisk Corporation, manufacturer of flash memory products and Sansa MP3 players.

The MusicGremlin music service and the MG-1000 device are no longer available. For Sansa products, please click here.

For any questions regarding your MusicGremlin account, please contact our customer support group at support@musicgremlin.com. If you have general inquires concerning MusicGremlin, please contact info@musicgremlin.com.
