Why do 2.x firmware upgrades screw up the player?

After I upgraded the Sport Plus firmware to 2.18, I am trying to pair again with my devices. After searching for devices for a second or two, I get a “Bluetooth error!” message.

Also the menus are screwed up but still readable. This upgrade has screwed up the player. I tried several other 2.x versions and I get the same issues.

I reverted to version 1.01 and it works fine.

Why can’t I upgrade to 2.x without issues?
