Western Digital External HDD#WDT-D3C

I have had this HDD for many years, and it has recently stop working, and I seek a replacement.

It was a 1TB model, that was either connected via a usb lead, oor could be powered by a 240v power plug and lead.

It attaches to my satellite receiver, to make it a pvr, as there is no internal drive in the satellite receiver.

The manufacturer of the satellite receiver used to recommend a wall powered WD HDD as the usb power slot on the receiver was not sufficient to use the external HDD with.

So I now require another 1TB externally powered drive to suit, and cannot (at this stage) seem to find another WD drive to suit.

Can someone guide me what model number I should look at as an alternative.

I am based in Australia.

Thank you for making me able to post here.

External hard drives are either USB Bus powered 5V or AC Powered 12V

I have never seen a hard drive that is both USB or AC powered ever

Anyways, if you need a 1TB External Hard drive AC Mains powered you are not gonna have much luck … because WD externals start at 3TB which is probably incompatible with your PVR.

Maybe try Gumtree for an old WD 1TB AC Powered drive.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.

here is a link showing exactly what they look like

So yes, they DID exist

Cheers

Thanks for the link … proves i’m correct

It’s externally powered by an AC Adaptor … and not by USB Bus Power.

If you lose the AC Adaptor, the drive will not work if you just plug the USB cable in … which you claim.

Bought it around 10 years ago from Harvey Norman for about $179

Took a photo of it just now to prove it

Thanks Joey…yep you are 100% correct. O have always had it connected by the wall plug, and incorrectly assumed it would also work with USB only…,sorry.

So it appears from your information and my searching, they have moved on.

Thanks for your time and help.

Hi there! So I just stumbled upon this thread and I have a question too :stuck_out_tongue: I also have this hard drive, and I was wondering if I can switch it out for a new enclosure that’s USB-C. I’m just wondering what type of enclosure would work for this WD Elements drive. Thank you!

The internal hard drive uses a standard SATA Interface … there’s just a USB daughter board connected to it which you can easily remove.

For a 1TB HDD you can use any 3rd party USB Enclosure (AC Powered of course) … i’ve removed a few WD HDD’s from there original enclosures because they were only USB 2.0 and put them inside a 3rd Party USB 3.0 enclosure for faster transfer speed.

Works fine

A USB-C enclosure should work fine as well with no issues.

The only thing with 3rd Party 3.5" enclosures you have to look for is what capacity they support … pretty much every enclosure no matter how old, will support up to 2TB

For drives over that … you need to check the supported capacity.

Example: i have a 4TB HDD … didn’t work in any of the older enclosures i own

So, i bought a new enclosure that stated it supported drives up to 4TB … and then the drive worked fine.

Thank you so much!
