WD Smartware Software Installer for Mac - Cannot get installed

Hello,

I recently bought WD My Passport and have been trying to install it on Mac (10.5) unsuccessfully. I have been doing the steps as UserManual claims but when arrives the part of installing WD SmartWare a message appears affirming installation has been complete. Yet, when I try to open it says “Cannot get installed SmartWare Version - WDSmartWareStatusMenu v.1.1.0.3”.

Any ideas for solutions, please??

Thank you!

It appears that Smartware is not installed properly by the installer.  This is what I did to install it:

  • Right click on the “WD SmartWare.app” (the installer) icon and select “Show Package Contents”.

  • A new Finder window opens. Go to “Contents” and then “Resources”. Copy “WDSmartWare.zip” from the Resources folder to your Desktop.

  • Double click “WDSmartWare.zip” on your desktop to unzip it. A folder named “WDSmartWare” is created.

  • Open the “WDSmartWare” folder and copy “WD SmartWare.app” to your “Applications” folder. SmartWare is now installed!

I strongly recommend AGAINST the WD software that comes with the drive. Using Time Machine is a much much better option for owners of Mac computers.

I’d avoid the Smartware also. It’s a buggy product. There are posts here where people did the firmware update and it corrupted their data.
