WD Passport is burying the CPU! Doesn't seem to want to stop

I have defined my backup as “File” instead of “Category” but disk activity doesn’t seem to ever stop and quite often the CPU loops up and won’t let me get into Windows for up to 1 minute. 

The Task manager is showing that WDFME is taking up approx 50% of the CPU ALL OF THE TIME!

The “Barber Pole” activity indicator in the Home tab of WDSmartware shows activity and says “Categorizing Your Files.”

Under “Settings - Software Settings - Backup Speed” I have checked the “Run Backup when Computer is Idle” checkbox.

First,  what is going on?

Second, is it possible to setup a scheduled backup, say at 1:00 AM each night?

The one bloating your CPU is the software, Smartware, not the passport itself. It happens a lot, randomly, and has no real fix if you have the problem on the latest version. I’d suggest to use Kiwi Monitor so it can kill Smartware if it goes above a set peak that you can program.

And Smartware doesn’t let you schedule the backup. Windows Backup does, which works with the passport as well.

I want to follow up on your suggestion.  I have used the Windows Scheduler before—but some time ago.  I don’t know what I should link to with the scheduler.  If I link to Smartware it won’t run by itself, right?  Or are you suggesting that I just do a Windows backup of my drives and forget Smartware?

It won’t run by itself because it is always running, so yes, I am suggesting to forget about Smartware and use Windows backup.

I would have responded about 1 minute earrlier but this d___ software had hung my computer again!  WHY would a company put out something that doesn’t work (retorical question)?  Do you know how I would go about contacting WD and asking them, “What gives?”

I only did one backup with Smartware because it was a resource hog and uninstalled it. You can use Windows backup or other software. This is free for a few more hours  Paragon Backup and Restore http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ you might try that too.

The WDFME process is also killing my Windows 7 memory.  When I kill the process, memory usage drops from 93% to 20%.
