WD My Passport acting very erratic

Hello,

I purchased my “My Passport 1TB USB3.0” a couple of months ago to use with my 2012 Macbook Retina. It was working flawlessly, until a colleague transfered a project onto it from his laptop, and it has been acting weird ever since. Now even after I completely reformatted the drive to rid the possibility of a corrupted file, the problems still persist.

Basically, I have it split into two partitions, ‘Time Machine’ and ‘External’. I can write to the drive as expected with USB3.0 speeds, but the moment I try to copy certain files off the drive, the transfer goes to a complete halt and after a couple of minutes returns “Error -36, Cannot read or write file”. It’s so unpredictable, as something like a Time Machine backup will write perfectly fine, but then a movie that I just copied onto it perfectly seconds ago, will not copy back onto my laptop and halt while transfering. Some files appear to be extremely slow at first, and then gradually speed up and finish, others will transfer a couple of hundred MB and halt. Some will transfer perfectly. It’s driving me nuts, because as I use it for work, and I’ll never know if I’ll be able to access something if I put it on there! So far, it appears to be only a read problem, when I write everything works as expected.

I have no clue what the issue is, I have used Disk Utility to Verify and Repair Disk, all turn up no errors. I have updated to the latest firmware, the problems persists. I have run diagnostic software to check for bad sectors, but none are found. The only signs of failure is with WD’s own Drive Utilities, in which Quick and Complete tests fail upon clicking it.

Any help is appreciated!

Thank you!

If the drive fails with the drive utilities you can replace the unit.

Before doing that, try formatting as just one partition and see if you still experience issues.
