Update crashes

I run the Passport SE on two computers…work and home. This latest update will not run on my work computer (Windows XP). It installs, however, when I open WD Smartware from the work computer, it crashes with the pop-up “Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close.”  When I try to open Smartware from the Passport SE connected to my desktop (work) it wants to install the original software, however, whichever choice I select nothing happens. I tried to uninstall on the desktop, however, it won’t unistall stating the program has a fatal error and cannot uninstall.

The update on the home computer (Windows Vista) installed and runs perfectly.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I attempted email help with Western Digital, however, I got a canned response stating the software does not update firmware (huh???) and got no further replies after I messaged that their response has not helped.

Thanks for any help. I need this to run on my work computer as I bought this Passport SE to be able to back up and transfer files between work and home. All worked perfectly until this update…jmm2216

On a whim, I went back and installed the original Smartware from the actual Passport SE drive. I now have back up capabilities with my work computer. I, however, am running that older software and still cannot use the updated Smartware software.

I have backup now avaiable but am still interested in any suggestions anyone may have so that I may be able to run the latest version.

did you make sure that you had all the updates before installing the latest version of smartware?  you need at least .net framework 3.5, and most likely the latest java updates as well as flash.  plus you have to have windows xp sp3, or it won’t run.

Thanks for the info. I will double check to be sure, but, I believe all is up to date. I confirmed the .net framework before the update so I know that is good. I am just about positive about the other items but will make sure when I get back to work in a couple days. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll post results in a couple days…jmm2216
