I recently upgraded and My Passport keeps crashing my system. I cant seem to open software. It starts (shows the WD Smartware Icon) and then just locks up. Very frustrating. My MyPassport is an old version, maybe 5 years old, I am ready to toss it. Help please.
If you have an older unit then it’s possible for the version of WD SmartWare that came with it to be incompatible with Windows 10.
Try installing the latest version of the application directly from WD’s site instead of installing the version that came with your unit. If the app can not be installed with the hard drive disconnected then there is a system issue at play, which could be related to pending Windows Updates.
Thank you - to the folks who sent me emails with suggestions. The problem reoccurred and the crash was really bad, it took me about four hours to get my system back to normal. I am not going to try to use the WD Passport or associated software again. Such a shame, the purpose being to protect my data in the event of a crash and now I can’t even recover what’s on there. Working on Plan B today for backing up my data.
