Unable to reinstall firmware to Sansa Fuze.

I had previously installed Rock Box on my Sansa Fuze and am now unable to remove the bootloader. Any help would be appreciated.

Manually re-install a new copy of the firmware to overwrite the Rockbox-modified one on the player.

You can download it here:

You will have to know whether you have a v1 or v2 model, though, There are separate firmware versiosn for each. And don’t forget to extract it from the .zip file.

Tried that It didn’t work.

Did you first “uninstall” Rockbox with the RB Utility or manually remove the rockbox folder from the player?

If you are desperate, putting the unit in MSC and formatting (to FAT32) from Windows will get rid of Rockbox. It will also get rid of all your content, however.

You should be able to force MSC by leaving the unit off and sliding the power switch down into Hold position (click, shows an orange dot in the slot).  Connect the USB end of the cord to the computer, open Windows Explorer (Computer or My Computer), hold down the << side of the wheel while connecting the Fuze connector.

Will the Sansa boot Sansa Firmware after that format option?

No it won’t, the bootloader isn’t even on the fat32 partition.

Anyway, from his post on the rockbox forums, it sounds like the problem was that the file he was trying to flash to his player was for a different sandisk player.  I think he just needs to go to that link you posted and download a firmware file.

I have the same problem getting rid of Rockbox from my Fuze V1

  1. “uninstall” Rockbox with the RB Utility ( rockbox folder no longer exist, but file fuzea.bin stil sits on root dir )

  2. place the stock firmware (fuze01.02.31.bin) on root

3. reboot original firmware by pressing and hold the Left button while turning on the player

Left button while turning on the player = able to boot up the original firmware

Normal turning on the player = Loading firmware, File not found > Plug USB cable

I am still able to start up the original firmware, but I have to press and hold the Left button while turning on the player on every time, is this normal ?

It seems Rockbox fu’d your Sansa Fuze and does not know how to fix it. I am hoping I can get an answer from Sandisk on how to go back to original firmware and bootloader.

re-downloaded stock firmware and re-run the option and finally got RB out of my Fuze

RB is a fun tool, but kinda complex for simple guy like me

And I definitely do not have the golden-ear to enjoy the better SQ out of RB (as most people claimed)

saratoga have been very helpful
a million thanks to saratoga

You must copy the file fuzea.bin to the root of your player. Then boot Sansa Firmware and wait for updatng firmware  message. If this does not work try reinstalling Rockbox and try again to remove it.

It does help to follow the directions in the firmware post, doesn’t it? :stuck_out_tongue:

My battery is at 31 percent.  The updater hasn’t replaced anything.  I still have no firmware on my computer.  Is there anything I cana do?

Please try to refrain from duplicate posts. They only confuse everybody. You have replies in your other one.

But in case anyone comes across this in the future, let me make a few points:

  1. The battery has nothing to do with the firmware (or vice-versa).
  2. The updater only updates; it doesn’t re-install firmware.
  3. The firmwware resides on the player, not your computer.
