Time machine hanging on preparing backup

I have reformatted one of my 4Tb my passports. It’s not backing up. It’s been connected for 11 hours and nothing was completed. I’ve had this issue now with 3 4Tb my passports over the last 3 years not to mention. My 2 mybook lives prior to 2010. Need assist. I can’t repair my MacBook until I back it up. Support was useless th we gave me rookie advice on how to set up time machine. :rage:
