My Passport Ultra will not move from preparing the backup to actually backing up my mac. I’m running OSx El Capitan. It used to work just fine, and I don’t think anything has changed. I have not dropped the drive or damaged it in any way. Anyone have a solution?
What are you using to make the backup? Can you access the data on the drive through finder?
I’m using Time Machine. Yes, I can access the previously backed up files in Finder.

No. This sounds like an issue with Time Machine rather than with the drive or it’s partition table. If the problem was with the drive, you most likely wouldn’t be able to access the data through finder.
Doing some quick research on Google, it looks like this is a pretty well known problem with the Time Machine application and there are a number of different fixes.
