Sudden speed drop while files copy from/to WD my passport ultra

Hi, I was struggling with WD My passport Ultra external 2 tb drive.

Problem is while copying any file from/to my hard drive, initial speed is appearing as more than 50Mbps - with in seconds speed is dropping into 700Kbps to 300Kbps. I tried to solve this problem - I couldnt find what would be the reason behind this.

I have tried:

  • Firmware update
  • tested (both tests) hard drive with Lifegard software.

I am using dell Inspiron series and I have USB 3.0.

Can some one please help me on this.

Hi,

What software are you using to copy files to the My Passport?

Be aware that Passport does auto encryption which may slow down coping.

If using WD Backup, please be patient. Initial copying requires the encryption and also formating Folders on the Passport to match the PC. Allow overnight.

Thanks for quick response.

I am not using any specific software to copy files. Its just windows 10 pro default copy agent.

Agree if its slow down to some Mbps around but Kbps is horrible.

However I will try your suggestion and will post the result.

Hi Clifford,

I left my laptop on copy, for 15 GB it took whole night(exactly 10 hours).

Still I am seeing the same speed, nothing improved.

I think this is not the issue with encryption.

Can you do another backup of the same files and time that? I’m hoping it is much quicker the second time.
