SSD plus 1 TB installed in a Mac mini

I purchased an SSD plus from Amazon (SanDisk SSD PLUS 1TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Up to 535 MB/s - SDSSDA-1T00-G26) in 2019 and installed it in my Late 2012 Mac Mini. I am currently running macOS Catalina but a recent attempt to update the OS has caused a big headache. The OS installation fails with the following message:

macOS cannot be installed on your computer

Storage system verify or repair failed.: (-69716)
Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

I tried to fix the SSD using Disk Utility but ran into problems. Using disk utility I can see the SSD(1 TB) listed twice (SSD name and SSD name - Data). The second listing shows used 908 GB data, while the first listing shows used 11.28 GB data. The SSD has about 72 GB of free space as per disk utility. Trying to repair the SSD using Disk Utility gave me the following error message:
