SmartWare doesn't recognize MyPassport

SmartWare 3.1.5.4 on Windows 7 x64 SP1 with MyPassport Essential SE 750GB USB 3.0 drive. The drive is connected to a USB 3.0 port and functions normally in Windows. The Home tab of SmartWare lists the drive under My Computer and is able to catalog all of the files. But when I go to the Settings tab, SetUp Drive is grayed out and there is no icon for the drive. Backup and Retrieve tabs are also grayed out.

I’ve been using my own script to do backups and restores for years. I only installed SmartWare because Windows was giving me alerts saying the Passport had disconnected several times, and the recommended solution was to install the latest SES driver. I did that but still got the alert message. So I downloaded SmartWare and installed it thinking that would solve the problem. Do I even need SmartWare or the SES driver?

Nope, you don’t need it.

Smartware is used to backup and restore files. If you have any other application to do that, then you can remove Smartware from your PC.

If you decide to continue using the software, make sure you have not deleted the software from the drive and just installed it on the computer. The software comes on the drive with all the drivers and ISO image , if you remove the image, the application will not run well.

Is that why it isn’t recognizing it - because I installed it from the WD website download instead of off the drive itself? I didn’t delete anything from the drive so the files you mention are still there.

good then, uninstall the software and reinstall it. this time using the one that comes on the drive.

Let me know how it goes
