It recognizes the computer it’s connected to, but the external drive is like it’s not even there. This happens very often, and sometimes when it does recognize it, it’s empty! I’ve backed up years of data to this. What’s going on? I spent a full day to reback up everything and now it’s not even showing up.

Is the drive seen on 'Computer"? Is it seen on Disk Management?
If it is then uninstall WD Smartware and install its latest version.
When I first set it up years ago, it showed up as a virtual disk in My Computer. Since then, it has not. Smartware shows the contents of the computer, but My Passport is not even showing up.
