You may want to try another computer. I have updated my Express using the Sansa Updater with no problem. Be sure to plug your device in a USB port near the power supply.
What version of the updater did you use? The current updater checks to see if the device is capable of MSC and the Express is not, consequently the update fail. I have tried several computers but this is actually a little bit of a red herring. The relevant issue here is that not all USB ports aare created equal. None of them are “close” to the power supply but some are higher powered than others. This shouldn’t be an issue on any decent modern USB hub and that would incude most newer built in to the motherboard USB 2.0 hubs.
I find it pretty frustrating that Sansa hasn’t at least acknowledged this issue. The technical support for Sansa Express has been pretty poor so far.

The most current version of the Sansa updater supports updating in MTP mode. just tested mine and workd no problem. maybe you should just contact sandisk tech support and ask to have the firmware emailed to you.
