Sansa 8 GB Fuze doesn't recognize SanDisk 4 GB or 8 GB MicroSD cards

I’ve tried 2 different sized MicroSD cards in my Sansa Fuze player. I’ve tried MTP and MSC Usb modes and neither indicates the existance of the extra flash memory in explorer. The firmware version is V01.01.22A. I have seen the second MicroSD card listed once in Explorer but it showed no memory (0 bytes). It’s formatted as FAT32. I’m looking for suggestions. Thanks!

If it doesn’t show up on the SystemSettings->Info screen on the Fuze, either the card or the Fuzes reader is probably broken.

Have you got an adapter you can so you can plug the uSD card directly into a PC USB port and test it for read/write?

Daytona has a good point. Is the card(s) recognised by the Fuze? It will be listed separately in the INFO screen. If is shows no card, then either the card is bunk, or the Fuze is junk.

If the Fuze does not recognize the card, then you wouldn’t be able to ‘see’ it either in Windows Explorer. If you’ve tried 2 cards and neither one shows up, it’s not looking good for your Fuze. It’s improbable, but not impossible to get a bad card, but 2?

Did you say you already tried formatting the cards? Only one thing more you can do, and that’s try a card reader. If they don’t show up, they must be bad, unless you’ve got a problem with your USB ports on your computer.

If they do show up via the card reader, then you know you need another Fuze.

I believe you are both correct. The Sansa player doesn’t recognize them, they are recognized in explorer. Thanks!!

OK. Are you inserting the card fully into the Fuze?

Of course you are - but I’ve got to ask

The contact pads on the card go downwards (when the Fuze is lying face up on a table), and the card should be just ever so slightly proud of the side of the player (less than 1/2 millimeter) when fully inserted. While being inserted, the card goes in further than that, and pops back out a little as it latches.

If that’s all good, your player is broken. I had to RMA an e260 with a broken reader.

If you can, I’d try for a replacement from your retailer - it might be quicker. My RMA took ~4 weeks, but then it did have to cross the Atlantic twice.

To do an RMA you need to register for an E-Box via the  Support link on the main SanDisk web site.

Yep, I inserted them correctly! I’m pretty good at this stuff, I teach Networking at a Community College.

Are you plugging the Micro Card into the card reader directly, or are you using an adapter? If so check the connection points. I had to clean mine once, after leaving the micro card in the adapter for a while.

OK. Hope you didn’t feel too insulted!

If he is any good he will understand why tech support people have to ask the REALLY REALLY basic obvious questions.

If you didn’t ask, he would know that you weren’t good.

Just look at the number of questions posted here in the last 24 hours that are answered by the FAQ thread!!!

I’m not the least insulted. If this field doesn’t make you humble, nothing will…

Well, I finally fixed it! I have to confess it was the type of mistake network people often make. We always tell our studnets to remember the PHYSICAL LAYER in the network. You know “Is the network card plugged in? No, really, unplug it and then replug it in!!!” Well I’m not going to eat crow on this one, It’ll be a whole RAVEN! I should have listened more carefully to your advice. I originally slid the microSD card partially into the unit and it stayed in place (I had to press it to remove it from the unit). Today, I was playing with it and pressed the microSD card a little harder UNTIL THE OUTSIDE EDGE WAS FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE SANSA FUZE! That solved the problem. I didn’t realize it had to be pressed in with so much force! Antother lesson learned…

Tanks for all your input!

It will be uber tight at first, as is your headphone jack. The more you use it especially if you have multiple SD cards, it will loosen up just enough so you dont feel like you are forcing it in.

I’ve got two SanDisk players with uSD slots, and both times I first inserted the card, I thought I was breaking something, especially in the Fuze, as I’d already sent my 9 month old e260 back with a broken uSD reader…

Actually, I wonder whether you DO break something on first insertion - perhaps some small plastic link holding parts together during assembley? Beacuse it really does feel brutal!

Anyway  - pleased to hear it works.

Thanks!
