I just got a Sandisk Gameplay 512gb MicroSD Express card for the Switch 2, and was surprised to find it has only 456gb of usable storage. This is notably less than the usual 476gb of usable storage you’d find on 512gb cards, and way less than the usable storage of other 512gb MicroSD Express cards. Is there a reason for this? Any insight would be appreciated.
A 512GB card normally has about 476GB of usable space, so your SanDisk Gameplay card showing only 456GB is lower than expected. This could be due to extra space reserved for system use, performance features, or hidden partitions meant for the Switch 2. If you didn’t buy it from a trusted seller, it might also be a fake. You can use a tool like H2testw to check the real capacity. If the card is genuine, it’s best to contact SanDisk support to confirm if this lower usable space is normal for that model.
Hey @tehkillermuffin That does seem odd—456GB is quite a bit lower than the usual 476GB you’d expect from a 512GB card. Just curious, where did you buy the card from? Also, have you tried running any tests like H2testw or ChipGenius to check the actual capacity?
You could try what @johnjacobb40 suggested—using a tool to verify if the card is genuine. If it checks out, then reaching out to SanDisk support would be a good next step to confirm if this is normal for the Gameplay version.
I got the card directly from Walmart as in-store pickup. It seems that all SanDisk Gameplay cards have 456 usable memory because there are multiple statements and reviews stating as such.
I just registered the product with Sandisk so it’s legit, but I’ll run tests on it and reach out to support–maybe they’ll have an explanation.
Since it’s a MicroSD Express card, SanDisk might be reserving more space for things like faster performance, wear leveling, or firmware. These newer cards work differently from regular microSDs, so a bit more overhead isn’t unusual.
If it’s specifically designed for the Switch 2, it’s possible that SanDisk set aside extra space to make sure games load quickly and run smoothly. That reserved space wouldn’t show up in available storage.
