Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD (USB3.2, etc)...

I just went made and bought one of these. I was :-O-ed at its size, a mere 45mm x 95mm x 10mm. I tested it on 1.3 GB of pics and videos, and got about 230 MB/sec max. The package says expect up to 520 GB/sec, but I’m running USB3 only. However, a couple of internal drives in docks do reach 300+

Win Properties shows the file system is exFAT (which I think is not as efficient with space as NTFS). I checked that my Crucial 1TB SSD is NTFS.

Now the question is, should I leave it as that or should I change it to NTFS (and is it even advisable to do that)? I wonder if this device is just a couple of SD-type cards in a box(???)

There are two pics below.

Thanks,
Larry

Hi @larrybell ,

To verify if your SSD is counterfeit, check the serial number against the manufacturer’s records and confirm the capacity and speed using specialized tools.

  1. Capacity Test: Use tools like H2testw, or NovaBench to write and read data across the entire drive, verifying its true size and finding bad sectors.
  2. Speed Test: Fake drives are often much slower, but since you mentioned the speed is 230 MB/sec, it doesn’t look like a red flag. If you’d like, run a speed test using software like iBoysoft DiskGeeker or a similar tool to confirm.
  3. System Tools: Use CrystalDiskInfo or similar programs to check SMART data.
  4. Formatting Time: Reformat your SSD and see if it takes a very quick or very slow format time. [ More tip : How to Check Read/Write Speed of SSD/HDD on Mac ]
