I want to start off by saying that I’ve emailed support@sansa.com and have not received anything in response. It’s been well over a week since I emailed them, so I figured I’d try here. What can it hurt, after all?
Whenever I try to sync my Sansa Fuze with Windows Media Player I get the error message, “Your device is using an outdated driver that is no longer supported by Windows Media Player. For additional assistance, click Web Help.”
My Fuze shows up in My Computer under Portable Devices (I’ve tried the USB mode as MTP and MSC). I’ve tried having WMP already opened on my computer, I still get the same error. I’ve tried connecting my MP3 player and then opening WMP, I still get the same error. No matter what I do, I get the same error. Up until today, I’ve had no problems syncing with WMP and am confused as to why I’m having issues now. I haven’t changed anything on my computer or MP3 player that could have possibly caused the issue.
After searching on the Sansa website and following tip number 5 in the FAQ section, I am not able to resolve my issue. My firmware on my Fuze is up-to-date. I have installed all Windows Updates for my computer. I’ve also looked for solutions online, but the only thing it seems that’s available is to rollback to Windows Media Player 10 and that’s not an option using Windows Vista.
I’ve also tried using MediaMonkey. MediaMonkey says that it’s copying the files over to my MP3 player. I check on my computer and indeed the files are on my Fuze. After I disconnect the Fuze from the computer in order to listen to my music, the Fuze says that there are no songs on it. I’ve tried this a few times, but the result is always the same.
I am able to put music on my MP3 player by dragging and dropping files in Windows Explorer, but this is simply not acceptable for me. I am not able to transfer album art that way and I would definitely like my album art on my MP3 player. Not to mention that I like having my music divided by artist, album, or what have you whenever you sync it with WMP or whatever.
I’m at my wits end as to why I’m suddenly having problems with my Fuze. It doesn’t make any sense and it’s really frustrating. I hope that someone is able to help me resolve my problem. Thank you in advance.
Just in case:
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Operating System (I do not have access to an XP System)
Arysa, I use MSC mode and I have no problems with transferring album art. Yes I use Media Monkey (version 3.07) to add album art. I find MSC mode the easiest for file management with the Fuze. You can do everything you need in MSC, you just got to manually tag each item, which is very easy to do.
The way I manage the Music folder is to have each Artist with their own folder. Then for each album from that artist have a separate folder within the Artist folder. Hence it should be:
Music\Artist\Album\Song.mp3
You might also try going into Device Manager and try updating the USB driver. Check each node of the "Universal Serial Bus controllers"to see if their drivers are the same. Then try update driver.

Do you mean that when you drag and drop files to the Fuze in Windows Explorer that the Fuze will see and play them?
If so, that means the connection to the Fuze is working, and you probably don’t need to reformat the device.
You’ve been changing USB modes, so be aware that files transfered to the Fuze internal memory in MTP mode are not visible to the PC when the Fuze is in MSC mode and vice versa.

You can store the content on the player in whatever folder structure you like - the Fuze doesn’t care.
I’m afraid I hate WMP and its ‘I know how to organise your stuff better than you do!’ attitude. So on a Windows PC, I always use Explorer to manage the content on my Fuze.
I have my music stored in folders \Artist\Album.… on my PC, and in Explorer, I simply drag the Artist folder to the Fuze.
It is perfectly possible to transfer album art with Explorer. You can either embed the art in the tags of the tracks, or, more simply, put a Folder.jpg file in the album folder with the tracks, and it just gets dragged across with the rest of the album. The Fuze is fussy about the size of the picture - 200x200 pixels or less works for me.

I decided to give this a go. I placed my album art as a folder.jpg in the album folder, but it doesn’t seem to work for me. The album art doesn’t transfer. I’ve made sure all album art is .jpg and is 200x200 pixels or less.
At this point, I don’t care about WMP (although I am curious as to why it suddenly says my device is using an outdated driver). I’m just wondering why the album art isn’t tranfering over to the Fuze. If I can figure that out, I’ll be all set.
EDIT : I decided to look around right after posting this. After unhiding system files and transfering the folder with the album art it shows up on the Fuze. It seems whenever I open WMP, it hides the folder.jpg as a system file. It also creates three other .jpg files (same picture, different name and size if I’m not mistaken). Does anyone know of a way to stop Vista from creating those extra files? I’ll look around on the internet and see what else I can find about it.
