First of all, I don’t think it’s a good idea to playback WAV files since it takes up a lot of space…if you ripped your CD…choose to rip it as mp3…saves a ton of memory and the sound quality is very nice…for now, I think Sansa Express supports WAV but only when you do voice record and FM record that it saves as WAV files but naturally it’s an mp3 player so try to play mp3 files instead then you would probably have less problem…cheers.
I know it’s not convenient but you can always rip to a high-quality (think 192 or higher) MP3 or WMA and you won’t be able to tell any difference unless you’re using really nice headphones in a really quiet environment. You’ll also save a tremendous amount of space as previously pointed out - you’ll use between 1/5 and 1/10 of the space even with high-quality compression rates.
I also have this problem with my Sansa Express. When the display shuts off the audio becomes distorted but when you turn the display back on it goes away. The .WAV file created by the Sansa Express (from a previously recorded FM program) does not have the distortion embedded in it , so it is something is going on with the Sansa Express playback.
I returned my unit (via RMA) and unfortunately my replacement unit has the same problem – it is very discouraging. I’m trying to find out when or if Sansa will fix this problem.
It’s almost as if the MCU goes into a power-saving mode when the screen blanks and does not have enough horsepower (MIPS) to properly feed the data to the CODEC and the audio gets messed up.

I can’t duplicate the problem you are having. Check to find if you have the latest firmware. If you do not, then install it and check if that resolves the problem.
You should consider converting the wav file to an MP3 file. You can download a program such as Audacity to convert and edit the file. Attached is a link to download the program. If you download it, also download and install the Lame MP3 Encoder.
Thank you Mr_Moose for spending the time to see if you can replicate the problem.
I tried the latest firmware and some other firmware that SanDisk sent me today to no avail.
What’s disappointing is I paid money for a product that does not appear to fully live up to its claims.
“Supports MP3, WMA, protected WMA, WAV, and Audible files”
A primary reason I bought this unit is for WAV file support (uncompressed, lossless audio). If the Marketing claim said it would not play back WAV files sampled at 48 kHz without problems when the display shuts off, I might not have bought this unit.
I don’t know why the audio is so messed up when the display shuts off but I’m hoping SanDisk will be able to find out the root cause.
In terms of FM recording with the Sansa Express, the audio is sometimes messed up as well when the display shuts off. The Sansa Express produces WAV files sampled at 32 kHz.
I’m willing to wait for a fix if SanDisk is committed to identifying and fixing the problems. I sent in my original unit via RMA. The replacement unit has the same problems.
