OS X Mavericks won't mount 3TB MyBook

It’s worked fine for about 9 months.  It doesn’t show up in Finder so I tried changing cables and USB ports.  When that didn’t work I tried Disk Utility which sees it as “3 TB WD My Book 1140” and shows it’s mounted but a while ago I renamed the drive “Backup Drive” on a single partition and that is grayed out below the main drive name.  I’m not sure what the difference is between these to but the renamed partition appears to be a sub-heading (grayed out and unmounted) under the factory name (which looks mounted but apparently isn’t).

I’ve tried erasing the drive, removing the single partition, repairing the drive using First Aid, etc. and every time it fails.  I’ve used Terminal to try to unmount the disk but it just tells me it isn’t mounted anyways although it shows up in the “diskutil list” command.  I then tried using the “diskutil mount” command and it said “timed out waiting to mount”.

I’m at the end of my knowledge level and have only gotten this far thanks to various forums.  I haven’t tried plugging it into another computer to see if it works but will do so on Monday.  In the meantime I’m hoping someone might have a suggestion.

I use this as a backup drive using Time Machine so there isn’t any critical data that I need i just want it to start backing up again.  I don’t mind erasing the disk or the partition if it will allow my Mac to see the disk again.  I’m just hoping the disk isn’t faulty after only 9 months.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

hi

i have the same problem, did you lately update the firmware, i did and then now it stop mounting

i can use fine in windows, obviously something to do with the hardware

The MyBook stopped being recognized by my Mac about 20 days ago.  I upgraded to Mavericks after that (10 days ago).  I recently installed WD SmartWare on my Mac to try to manage my three WD drives but it doesn’t see this drive in question either so I can’t update the firmware on it at all.

I think this will be my third and final WD drive.  What’s the point of having a backup drive if they’re so prone to failing.  It seems like every other post on this forum is about a similar issue with almost no solutions being offered by Western Digital.

On a side note, my WDTVlive has been a pain from the beginning but I’ve now replaced that with Chromecast ($35) and Plex Media Server and it works great.  I can access all of my movies remotely or on my iPhone/iPad, I can share my media folders with friends remotely, and I can send movies from my Mac to my TV easily.  Step up your game WD.

Quick update…

I had installed WD SmartWare a couple of weeks ago but since the Mac stopped seeing one of my 3TB drives it wasn’t doing me any good.  This morning SmartWare for some reason started recognizing the drive in question but showed that it wasn’t mounted.  Using the “Mount Volumes” option didn’t do anything though.

However, I was able to use WD SmartWare to update the firmware on the drive then used the diagnostic tools to run a “Quick SMART Status” test which came back fine.  Then I ran a “Quick Drive Test” which also came back fine.  I’m now running the full disk scan for it to detect any bad sectors on the disk.  It’s been running for an hour and is at 40%.  If it finishes and shows there’s nothing wrong with the disk I’m going to then use the “Drive Erase” feature and hopefully that will work.  I have two identical WD 3TB drives plugged into the same Mac and don’t understand why it sees one but not the other.

With the disk wiped clean I’m hoping the Mac will allow it to “mount” and I can use it again.  If not, I need to try to find a way to delete the single partition and/or reformat the disk.  I’m not sure how I’ll do either of these though if the Mac doesn’t see the hard drive since this is the only Mac I have access to.  I do have my work PC at the office but I don’t know if I can use that to format it for a Mac.  Just talking out loud.  Will report back after the full disk scan is complete in SmartWare in case this is helpful to anyone else with the same issue.  I would still welcome any suggestions.

…update…

The “Complete Drive Test” scan in WD SmartWare finished after a few hours and the drive is perfectly fine.  So I tried the following in Terminal to force it to mount the volume…

iMac-2012:~ Brent$ diskutil mount disk4

Volume on disk4 failed to mount; if it has a partitioning scheme, use “diskutil mountDisk”

So I tried…

iMac-2012:~ Brent$ diskutil mountDisk disk4

One or more volume(s) failed to mount

…then this…

iMac-2012:~ Brent$ diskutil mountDisk disk4s2

One or more volume(s) failed to mount

…then this…

iMac-2012:~ Brent$ diskutil mountDisk disk4s1

One or more volume(s) failed to mount

So still no luck in getting this volume to mount.

…update…

1st, I’m amazed that the majority of posts on this forum seem to be having a similar problem to mine of their Mac no longer seeing their WD drive.  Sadly it seems like most of the WD team’s answers to these posts have been to try a different USB port or change the cable.  When this of course doesn’t work they appear to drop off the radar.

2nd, after exhausting everything else I finally found my own solution so I’ll post it here in case others having the same problem find this helpful…

From everything I tried in my posts above there appeared to be nothing wrong with the drive but I couldn’t do anything on a Mac to fix it because it wouldn’t mount.  So I took the drive to work and plugged it into my PC.  It couldn’t mount there either but when I opened Disk Management it saw the disk and I was able to erase it of all data.

My next step was to format the hard drive to a format that would work with a Mac and a PC (FAT32).  This isn’t the ideal format for a Mac but I wanted to make sure I could do it on the PC and have the Mac at least see it.  I brought the drive back home and plugged it in.  It still didn’t show in the Finder window but I opened up Disk Utility and there it was.

So I erased the partition and created a new partition using the more current format (HFS+) which of course is only for Macs.  After renaming the partition(s) and creating them they now show up perfectly in Finder and as I type this Time Machine is now backing up again to my WD 3TB drive like it used to 20 days ago.

Sadly though I think this 3rd and final Western Digital hard drive will be my last.  I’m frustrated by this issue as well as the other major issue that many Mac/WD users found with the latest OS upgrade of data loss.  I’m also frustrated with the lack of answers from WD on this forum to all of the posts similar to mine.  I have very limited tech knowledge but after about 20 hours of research, forums and trying everything I was able to fix it.  I’m not sure why no one at WD seems to be able to.  Of course every situation is different and my solution might not work for others but I hope it helps someone as frustrated as me.
