I plugged my sansa into my computer yesterday evening to charge it, and when I disconnected it to return to playing the book on mp3 I was listening to, the player did not resume play with the file it had been playing before I charged it. I didn’t transfer any content, although the sansa updater did run automatically when I plugged it in.
Is the resume play feature not what “charging from USB does not force database to refresh” means?
The previous firmware would refresh the database and go to the music menu after USB connection… The change should allow the device to skip the time consuming refresh step.
As far as resume, it may be that the resume position was not saved before plugging the device to USB. Try powering the device off while playing a track, before connecting to charge it then see if that will resume properly.
I downloaded and installed the updater software, but when I try to check for a firmware update, it says my device is in MTP mode and must be in MSC mode. The directions on the web site say to go to ‘settings’ then ‘USB’ and change to MSC, but I don’t have a ‘USB’ under ‘settings’
I’m trying to update the firmware in hopes to be able to sync some music I purchased through Yahoo! Music. The error I get from Windows Media Player says:
“It is not possible to obtain device’s certificate. Please contact the device manufacturer for a firmware update or for other steps to resolve this problem.”

Where do you see these directions on the website? The Clip has no way to change the USB mode to MSC via the firmware. The only way to put it into MSC mode is to slide the hold switch to hold, press down on the center button, and then connect the Clip to your USB port.
Also, the Updater software does not require that you put the Clip into MSC mode in order to update its firmware. What version of the Updater software are you using? After installing the software, when you plug in the Clip (in normal MTP mode) and right-click on the Updater icon in your task bar, select “About”. It should report version 1.082 (as of today).
I downloaded updater v1.041. Couldn’t find link to1082 as posted above. I have firmware V01.01.11A and when attempting to update, the updater prompts that I have the most current update. I uninstalled and reinstalled the updater twice. What am I doing wrong?

If this is legit … be very careful to download software from sandisk.com, not scandisk.com. The letter was written six years ago, so maybe sandisk.com bought the domain name scandisk.com … can anyone verify this?

But that’s the one that you just downloaded, which worked, right? I’m talking about the older one that wasn’t working for you.
Actually it is not the one I just downloaded. That download is a 3.26MB file which didn’t work. I copied and pasted into my browser Sansafix’s 2nd link below which was the correct file:

Thank you for this update, and so quickly after the initial release. I originally posted about the voice recording sample rate, and the newly increased sample rate sounds great–noticeably more natural and open sounding than before. The idea another poster had for a selectable sample rate (or an even higher-quality rate) would be great, of course, but I’m pleased with this update–I’ve already been enjoying the Clip a lot and now it’s suddenly a lot closer to my “ideal”. Thanks for making this great little device even more useful!
OK. I had the wrong updater. I don’t remember how I found it, but I uninstalled it and reinstalled the correct version. However, I still got a message saying that I needed to change modes. I followed the instructions given (put on hold and press middle button) then it updated the firmware. Now, should I change modes back? How do I know what mode I’m in? Does it matter?

That’s weird … I didn’t need to put my Clip into MSC mode to update the firmware. As a matter of fact, it’s plugged into my PC in MTP mode now, and I can right-click on the Firmware Updater taskbar, select “Check for updates now”, and it shows me my firmware version and the latest firmware version available.
If you disconnect your player, it’ll revert to MTP mode automatically. You’ll know you’re in MTP mode if you open up My Computer and see the Clip shown with name “Sansa Clip 2GB” (or 1GB), type “Portable Media Player”. If you’re in MSC mode, it’ll show up as type “Removable Disk”, and will have a drive letter assigned to it, similar to the hard disk on your PC.
Different people prefer one mode or the other. Probably most people use MTP mode … you don’t have to fool around with the hold switch and middle button, and you can copy DRM-protected (licensed) content onto the Clip. Some people like to use MSC mode because, among other things, they may have a program that will access the Clip’s memory directly, and that program requires that the memory be accessible as a “disk” (have a drive letter).
Thanks! I feel like such a ‘newbie’ since I’m not only new to the Clip, but this is also my first portable music device. I’m learning all kinds of new alphabet soup info, like DRM and MSC, etc. Hopefully I won’t be too much of a pest!
