New MPW PRO released

Where will this leave us, the old MPW users?
MPW PRO info

It leaves us with original MPWs with not the latest wireless drive anymore; so welcome to the world of progress and improvements. The new device seems clearly aimed at the pro, and wanna be, pro photographers, who expressed frustrations with the original SD card functionality. There is a larger max HD size (3TB - if one feels the need for more than 2TB) and something new a movie streamer would want, (5G/ac wireless – that should have been part of the original MPW) but for the most part the original can get the streaming job done. The old one is now on sale at WD Store until end of June for those looking for a deal. If my current MPW breaks down, that is when I would consider buying the newer one, but not until.

I am worried that the MPW development will stop and the firmware that we now have is end of the line.

On the other hand… MPW Pro seems to have attracted attention from the Plex team and they now have a MPW Pro Plex version out. This is magic!

Let’s hope any appropriate FW to come from the Pro will find it’s way into the older device.

I am not a PLEX fan at all. In fact, today, I updated PLEX today on my DL2100 to see if it is improved. I find it to be a bloated app that I don’t want to use on my Roku or PC.

For me Plex is the by far preferred media solution serving the whole family over 4 computers, iPads and iPhones at home and on travel. No other solution can do what Plex does (and does good)

And for me, the MPW is motivated to a high degree (together with SD card backup for my photography) as a try to cut down on costs for streaming data (from the Plex archive at our NAS) while we are traveling, on vacation aso.
But instead of just copying/syncing selected parts of the Plex content onto the MPW seamlessly i have been forced to recode and manually shuffle files onto the MPW and work with another app (Infuse, which is ok/good but not my Plex) to make the media solution work. Ok solution, but not by far preferred.

I agree, @Stangen… I’ve had PLEX running on my DL4100 for ages now, and even went through the walkthrough someone posted on the PLEX forums on how to install it on the original MPW.

On the MPW, it works reasonably well, but the CPU is terribly underpowered for database scan and build. It streams well enough to my iDevices. It’s definitely always in my travel bag.

I’m going to do a bit of research on the performance differences in the two processors and see what it can bring to bear.

I’m going on an extended multi-national trip in the coming months, and if this box is more useful, I’ll be placing an order.
