Hi, I am new to this community so not sure if this is the place to post?
Can anyone explain the benefits of the newer Wireless Pro over the Wireless?
The new model allows you to use it as a USB charging device for phones and tablets. The SD card slot has a faster transfer rate. It also gives you larger capacity choices, and it supports Plex Media Server. You can compare the models at this site.
also has 5ghz wireless in addition to the 2,4ghz
I have both units.
At this point in time, I give an edge to the wireless pro.
Only hesitation is that I recently had to RMA a 4TB Wireless Pro after using it for a few months. . . .not sure what went wrong, but it flaked out. I have the replacement for about a week. . . seems to work
As pointed out above, the Wireless Pro is the newer model.
Being newer, it has USB 3.0 (a large benefit), 5.0ghz wireless (minor benefit), and higher capacity options (a larger benefit)
The wireless Pro does indeed come with Plex. This is reason enough to favor the newer model.
Word of caution: The Wireless Pro processor is borderline for Plex. It won’t handle transcoding. But if your files are directly playable on your TV, Tablet or Phone such that transcoding isn’t needed. . . .it will work great.
Original MPW also has USB 3 port.
Plex is really not needed on these devices, especially using my for-tablet and phone mp4 videos I play directly from MPW; Plex is best suited on a more powerful wired NAS; if at all. If you are playing on a device that plays most any video file (e.g. a WDTV) Plex is totally unnecessary.
I agree. Plex sounds good but Twonky is a simpler option.
Plex took forever to organise my library on the MPWP. Then I discovered that linking this devices Plex to your Plex account renders Plex unusable without access to the internet. When travelling I may not have internet access and so Plex won’t stream. Unlinking the account solves the problem but it just seems too complicated.
I decided to ditch Plex on my MPWP and use the built in Twonky server. Organised my library of several hundred videos in just seconds. Works a treat with my iPad/iPhone and nPlayer app using SMB connection. No stuttering and no need for internet.
One of the best reasons for having a wireless drive is “no internet needed” Poor internet signal is like no signal at all. For watching videos on iOS things, the My Cloud app works fine, and for music I prefer an app called Music Streamer with lots of handy features.
Built with 802.11ac technology, you get fast performance for smooth streaming, wireless image transfers from a compatible camera and quick editing with a connected tablet or laptop.
