MyBook Essential 1TB USB3

Hello,

I have a new MyBook Essential with WD Smartware.  I understand that the Smartware does not work over a network.  I would like to connect my WD to the mass storage USB port on my Netgear router.  Is there any software that will automatically backup my PC and laptop using this connection?

Thank you

I’ve seen customers that have been able to use Smartware whit the drive connected to a Netgear router, However it does not mean that it’s going to work on your case. It would not hurt to try.

If it does not work,  there’s plenty of software out there that will do the trick.  Here you have a link that shows available software :

We do sell the My Book Live which is a NAS that uses Smartware.

Thank you.  I appreciate the answers.  I realised that I bought the wrong product.  I returned the WD Essential and am now awaiting delivery of a WD Live.

I thought I had been careful in selecting the product, but it was only on plugging it in and playing with the software that I realised the error of my ways.  Is the description of the MyBook Live perhaps too heavy on the media streaming etc and not enough attention paid to the more basic aspect of file storage and backup?  I will go away and check.

Thank you again.
