I have a MyBook Duo that has been working fine for months (years?).
It suddenly stopped being visible in Finder and Disk Utility. The light is on, the disks are active, but it’s just not there.
In ‘About this Mac … System Report’ it shows the drive details under the Thunderbolt connection. But it doesn’t show in Finder, or Disk Utilities (from app or terminal).
I’m running a MacBook Pro with the latest Sierra 10.12.6 (using the Apple Thunderbolt to USBC connector).
I’ve also tried it on an older Mac Air - which has the same behaviour. So it’s not OS/laptop related.
It has worked once since it failed (after repeated unplug/start/stop/etc), and I have seen it flash briefly occasionally in Finder on startup - but generally shows nothing now (just the light on),
I’m going to try another Thunderbolt cable (when I can find it), but as it consistently shows under the Thunderbolt connection in System Report - I’m not convinced it is that.
I just wondered if anyone has any other suggestions before I take the plunge and upgrade to a NAS enclosure?
Hi Brandon.P - thanks for your comment and suggestion.
TL;DR - it worked with a different Thunderbolt cable.
I did raise a support ticket, which I got a reply to within a day (which was good) outlining some things to try (which basically amounted to turning things on in a certain order) - I tried that but it didn’t help. They also suggested the cable.
I did finally just manage to find my other thunderbolt cable - it actually worked. I didn’t expect it to as the drive had been displaying under the thunderbolt bus in System Report.
I have been using the thunderbolt cable with the (official Apple) USB-C adapter. I did notice the end of the thunderbolt cable that was connected to the adapter was quite hot. Not sure if this was coincidence or was connected to the problem.
