My MyBook stopped showing up after a High Sierra update. What to do? This is so frustrating. Thank you. Nothing in Disk Utility. (The hard drive is locked with a password with WD, I forgot what the app is called)
Same problem here, just using a My book Thunderbolt duo 6TB drive instead. It is configured as a RAID1 and holds all my Time Machine backups, so no way to roll back. I can actually see my drive in System Reports and also see when I connect-disconnect the thunderbolt cable. It even reads all the details of the drive. However, I don’t see the drive anywhere else, so Disk Utility, from the terminal, etc.). The drive seems to behave normally and no errors from it, but as I cannot run WD Utilities either (not working) I cannot be sure.
I currently don’t have another thunderbolt machine available so cannot check the connection there and it does not seem possible to buy a Thunderbolt to FireWire800 to connect it to my MBP as the cable i unidirectional only.
Would really appreciate some help and guidance to access my drive again. If this is merely a matter of waiting for an update from either apple and/or WD then if someone knows who I should expect it from then that is ok as well.
This is what I see from System Report after connecting the WD drive:

So it turned out to be a cable problem. This WD product has a quite crappy USB 3.0 cable and apparently it became somewhat defective inside.
For some reason the cable still worked with my new MBP but older one refused to see external disk most of the time (in some cases when twisting the cable in a particular angle, it would show up).
I bought a nice Hama USB 3.0 cable as a replacement (twice the diameter of the original) and now all works fine.
Note that I initially thought it’s Mojave related because:
at about the same time when I updated to Mojave, I changed position of my desk and also position of my external drive. This changed the angle of cable and that’s why it stopped working.
the cable worked on the new MBP which had High Sierra. Later I even twisted the cable in different ways but it still continued to work with this machine.
I am having the same issue, but I am able to see the drive in WD Drive Utilities, first 2 test passed awaiting on the Complete Drive Test to finish. I am using High Siera 10.13.6 that was the latest update I can have on my iMac Mid 2011.
I also have Time Machine on it and need a couple of files from it but cant find them even after downloading StellarDataRecovery.
Are there any firmware updates for this drive My Book Essential wdbacw0020hbk-01?
