My Book Duo - Unable To Back Up Files

Is there an issue when you shut your system down normally and then remove power to the My Book Duo and the PC for a period of time and then after reconnecting everything as it was try to run a backup and it continues to fail and report it is unable to back up files"???

I have a 4TB My Book Duo in RAID 1 configuration. Windows 10. I was able to make an initial backup followed by a small incremental backup as I added a new file to my PC. I shut down my PC normally and then had to remove power from the PC and the My Book Duo for several days. When I reconnected (My Book Duo to same USB port) and applied power, and started my PC back up I added a new file and then selected Backup Now from the WD Backup software. A message then appeared “Unable to backup files to My Book Duo. Please make sure your drive is connected and accessible”

I ran all of the diagnostic tools in the WD Drive Utilities and they all passed. I can see the My Book Duo in Windows Explorer as well as the WD Backup.swstor file. Device manager shows the WD My Book Duo under Disk drives with device is working properly.

I am able to even see the incremental backups on the My Book Duo using the WD Backup Restore Files utility and even able to select any file from the backup and restore it to a folder location on my PC .

I even kept the PC on for a full day to wait for the scheduled backup time and when that time came I received the same "Unable back up files message… I have also done normal power down PC, with My Book Duo still powered, and then power PC back up again.

Any Ideas besides having to wipe it clean, make a brand new backup, and never remove power??? Much Appreciated

Hi,

Are you able to transfer files manually to your My Book Duo by copy and pasting and what’s the file format of the new file stored on your computer?

Copy and paste is not an issue with any file or folder. The files are all types word documents, pictures, etc… It made an initial complete back-up followed a day later by a normal scheduled backup.

The PC and the My Book Pro Duo was then disconnected, removed power source and disconnected drive from USB port for several days. Upon reconnecting the My Book Duo exactly the same as it had been connected, same ports… and then applying power to the both the PC and the Duo upon restart of the system and all subsequent restarts the issue continues.

Trying different USB ports, restarting, uninstalling and re-installing the software have absolutely no effect.

Seems it’s just me… ?

Since I am unable to find a solution I decided to just use the imbedded Windows Backup. While I can still see the original WD backup and by using the WD software retrieve information from that initial backup I will keep that backup file for a while.

The Windows 10 backup has worked even when I have had the system completely unplugged from power, the internal D drive removed, and the external WD HDD system detached with no power.

The Windows backup started with no issues when I reassembled everything.

Seems to me to be a flaw with WD backup software and Windows 10.

hi

I’ve had this drive for just a few days and experience the same issue. Not what I expected from a new drive. Sometimes it backs up, surely it should work every time?

I have had a similar problem, I can see My Book Duo with explorer, WDC Backup, Macrium Reflect and Windows back up but since I formatted the drive Acronis cannot recognise the drive.
