My Book Duo 16TB will not wake from standby mode

I have a new 2 x 8TB My Book Duo. It is plugged into a PC with Windows 7 (32bit) using a USB 3.0 cable. I configured it as JBOD, and both drives show up in Windows Explorer.

The drives work fine. After several minutes of not being used, the Duo goes into standby mode, and the front white LED flashes slowly. Nothing I do at this point will wake it up. If I try to access folders on the drive via Explorer I get an I/O error. If I run chkdsk in a command prompt window it says the drive is formatted as RAW. The only way I can figure to wake it up is to unplug and re-plug the power cord. If I open WD Utilities application, the application responds very slowly, but I can get to the ‘Sleep Timer’ tab, which sounds applicable. The sleep timer is set to Off there.

How can I fix this?

Hello,

Check your USB port settings.
Make sure the computer is not turning the USB ports off.

Thanks. No, computer is not turning the USB ports off. This is only a problem with the MyBook Duo device. I use the USB ports on this computer for MANY self-powered and USB-powered USB hard drives. I work with a large number of USB hard drives of all sorts, including WD MyPassport 2TB drives.

I’ve done some additional troubleshooting.

  1. Configured the device as RAID1. This does work, and I do not have the wake-up problem.
  2. Re-configured it back to JBOD. I still have the wake-up problem with this configuration. After the device has gone to standby, when I try to access it I get errors like “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.”

It seems like this is a bug specific to JBOD configuration?

I have the same issue with a 44TB version and configured as RAID1. Did you ever find a solution? I have it installed in a Linux system though, but the issue is the same.
