I have a 3tb My Book for iMac and it powers but it is not being read by my disk utility on my imac or mac book pro. Howver, the wd drive utility does recognize the device. Any help?

Looks like your WD is unmounted; this might have happened due to logical corruption of the drive. Backup this disk to another media and try to reformat the drive.
