Help please! I can not load any files from my Passport!

My Passport external harddrive is messed up. I *think* it’s because of a power surge or something (suddenly the outlet my computer was plugged in to [and yes i did have it plugged into a surge protector, but i guess it wasn’t strong enough?] stopped working. the desk lamp won’t even work in that outlet anymore).

SOMETIMES my computer reads the hard drive, and lists the folders, but I can’t open any of them. NOTHING happens it just “thinks” about it forever and nothing ever happens and i have to manually turn the computer off, because the window won’t close, the ‘task manager’ won’t even force it to quit. it just ‘thinks’ forever. It sort of freezes, but sometimes i can minimize the window, other times not.

OTHER TIMES it won’t read at all. it makes noise and the light blinks, and the “safely remove hardware” option shows that it’s plugged in, but the drive doesn’t show up under ‘my computer’. I have a shortcut to it on my desktop too, and that doesn’t do anything when i try to open it.

I NEED the things on this HD. Literally ALL of my work files are on it. (I know i should have had it backed up but this IS the back up for my old computer, which basically just died 2 months ago. I hadn’t had a chance to back up the back up yet!)

Can anyone help me to recover the files on there?

This hard drive is only TWO MONTHS old. I bought it just before christmas. I don’t know what to even do!

Please help! Thank you.

Hi ziarci, sorry to hear you can access your files. Have you tried connecting the Passport to another PC or using a data recovery program? It is provable that the damage is beyond do it yourself repairs, I recommend you to contact any of the WD data recovery partners on the support page, some of them offer free evaluations.

thank you so much. I did try a data recovery program and it did not even find the hard drive. however, I found a solution somewhere else online and it seemed to work (at least long enough for me to copy my files to another drive).

thank you for your response!
